I’m taking a pause from watching the Paris Olympics and trying not to vent my frustration at the BBC inexplicably switching from a brilliant gold medal tennis match yesterday to shooting and so forth, to give you all some exciting news.

At Dairy Industries International, we are planning for the future.

Yes, the Dairy Industries Expo will be running again in the UK next year, with a view towards bringing to the industry what has been demanded from industry professionals – a dedicated event that encompasses the entire dairy processing chain, from processor to plate.

The Dairy Industries Expo will bring together the latest in processing machinery and services, packaging machines and materials, turnkey suppliers, quality control and assurance, ingredients, and logistics, creating the most comprehensive international dairy processing show, all under one roof.

Targeting the entire dairy processing and manufacturing industry, the event will provide a platform for meeting new customers and strengthening relationships with current clients. This is the industry’s own event, set to deliver all the latest innovations and developments – from butter, yogurt and milk, to ice cream, cheese and whey, and so much more.

This means, sadly, that we will not be working with our friends at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards next year, as we’re looking to cover the entire spectrum of dairy products and services with our event. Cheese is obviously a wonderful, diverse product type, but it is just one colour of the rainbow that is dairy.

So, keep an eye out on your inbox and on the socials, as we will be announcing the dates and venues coming up. Every year we plan to get bigger and better, and 2025 is set to be a great show for the expo and the industry. Don’t miss out!

Visitors will experience cutting-edge dairy innovations and equipment presented by exhibitors, and they can participate in informative workshops and seminars.

The event will feature an exciting programme of keynote presentations covering all sectors of the dairy industry, with free-to-attend sessions on the exhibition floor. Additionally, a series of engaging workshops will ensure that Dairy Industries Expo is much more than just a trade show.

Organized by the leading industry journal Dairy Industries International, alongside Bell Publishing’s experienced events team, the Dairy Industries Expo was launched in response to the industry’s call for an international event specifically targeting their needs.

Tetra Pak and Mengniu Group have launched a limited edition Milk Deluxe Pure Milk range, customised with 30 different designs of masterpieces from Van Gogh and Monet. Packaged in Tetra Prisma Aseptic 250 Edge cartons with DreamCap 26 closure, the special edition range has been brought to market through a collaboration with Meet You Museum. The cartons are now accessible to consumers across Greater China, both online and in stores.

These “handheld” works of art offer consumers an immersive experience, all while enjoying a nutritious milk drink, the companies say.

Tetra Pak Custom Printing is the first digital inkjet-based printing method in the carton packaging industry that is unrestricted by physical printing plates. It allows for over 30 designs on a single packaging material reel, and can produce limited ranges or commemorative editions of their products in an agile way. The solution also gives F&B players the ability to quickly activate marketing efforts and capitalise on consumer trends.

Xiaoyan He, senior brand manager of Milk Deluxe, comments, “Our collaboration with Meet You Museum, exploiting the potential of this solution, is helping Chinese consumers to enjoy timeless pieces of art from Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet on a daily basis.”

]]>
With the new EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) along with increasing demands for climate protection across the board, the packaging industry will have more than enough to discuss at this year’s Fachpack. ‘Transition in Packaging’ is the event’s fitting motto from 24 to 26 September 2024 in Nuremberg. Visitors to the fair will have an opportunity to find out about the full range of sustainable, cost-effective solutions that Schubert, the packaging machine manufacturer from Crailsheim, has developed for consumer goods manufacturers at Stand 1-244 in Hall 1. As an example for the new ‘Power Compact’ machine concept – high output in the smallest space with lean yet high-quality technology – a bar packer with a single-lane erector and feeding via the Comfort Feeder will be in operation at the stand. The Schubert experts will also be demonstrating how further sustainability potential through the interaction between packaging and machine technology can be harnessed.

The international sustainability megatrend is certainly nothing new for Schubert: With its Mission Blue Sustainability Initiative, the machine manufacturer has set itself ambitious goals that have already resulted in a multitude of specific measures. These are also detailed in the Schubert ANNUAL 2023 – the combined annual and sustainability report for the year 2023 – published for the first time earlier this year.

One of the company’s key objectives is to support consumer goods manufacturers on their journey towards a sustainable future. It is therefore constantly evolving our modular machine technology. On the one hand, to improve energy efficiency in machine operation, and on the other, to maximise the efficient use of all technical components in line design and achieve optimum performance from the leanest possible solution.

Lean machine concept saves resources and costs

This can be experienced live on the ‘Power Compact’ line showcased at the Schubert stand. The bar packer with a single-lane erector and blank infeed directly from the pallet via a Comfort Feeder offers manufacturers an exceptionally advantageous, lean machine concept: a very compact and space-saving line, erecting, filling and closing at 60 cycles per minute, few system components whose performance can be fully exploited thanks to single-lane carton processing, lightweight 3D-printed robot tools and a blank infeed that enables continuous operation for up to five hours without refilling. Moreover, the efficient erecting process can be flexibly integrated into other Schubert lines. This concept not only saves material and resources, it also enables customers to achieve high packaging output with high-quality technology and surprisingly cost-effective operation. While these initiatives already go a long way towards sustainability, Schubert customers can improve their ecological footprint even further with this type of machine solution: In many cases, packaging in fully recyclable cardboard boxes can replace conventional variants with plastic film or plastic labels. The blanks fed in via the Comfort Feeder can be optimised in advance to ensure the greatest possible recycling of the packaging material. The precise, robot-assisted filling in the top-loading process is especially well suited for placing products precisely into narrow cartons and saving packaging volume – one of the new PPWR’s specific requirements.

Sustainable solutions through the interaction between packaging and machine

Whether existing cartons need to be machine-compatible, new cardboard packaging is required instead of plastic packaging or alternatives are being developed together with a packaging manufacturer, Schubert has solutions to address these and many other packaging issues. The manufacturer’s flexible, modular and easily convertible packaging machines process both conventional and fully recyclable packaging. Visitors to the stand will experience how Schubert is using its decades of experience with cardboard and the creation of innovative technologies, such as Dotlock, to develop more sustainable packaging solutions. Dotlock is a new technology for joining packaging made of solid or corrugated cardboard entirely without glue – but with the same strength as glued packaging. In the future, it will be possible to fully integrate the erecting process for Dotlock packaging into the packaging line. Schubert also offers advice and solutions for switching to more sustainable packaging in the area of plastic films: With the Schubert Comfort Package sample book, the manufacturer supports its customers in selecting the optimum flow-wrap film in terms of machinability and recyclability – taking into account specific product properties and requirements.

Visitors to the trade fair are welcome to discuss their individual needs and questions with the Schubert experts at Stand 1-244 in Hall 1.

Delamere Dairy has unveiled its new CartoCan Flavoured Milk range for its on-the-go customers.

The CartoCan is 100% recyclable, reduces plastic waste and offers a convenient alternative to its 500ml glass bottle format.

Ideal for channels including convenience stores, wholesale, travel, food service, and hospitality establishments such as grocery stores, museums, public houses, colleges, air travel, trains.

The Cartocan also provides a safer and more practical alternative option for stadium events and child-focused locations.

235ml is the perfect size for lunch boxes, vending machines and meal deals. It is also school-compliant with less than 5% sugar and has no artificial sweeteners, flavourings, colours or preservatives.

According to Circana data the UK’s flavoured milk category in the UK is worth estimated £628 million annually*, and Delamere is a big contributor to this, selling upwards of 20,000,000 units per year, which until now has only been available in 500ml and 240ml glass bottles.

Sales in convenience grew by 13% in the 52 weeks to October 2023, contributing 44% of total category sales.

The CartoCan can be stored at ambient temperatures and is best enjoyed chilled. It offers all the goodness and nutrients of normal milk and is a great source of protein, calcium and vitamin D and is available in its two best-selling flavours – Strawberry and Chocolate with Banana to follow in 2025.

Steven O’Connor, Senior Business Growth Manager at Delamere, commented, “Wehave long-since wanted to offer a different packaging option to our customers, and the CartoCan is perfect for reducing plastic waste and opens up new channels for distribution with an alternative to glass featuring our best-selling flavours. It will appeal to all ages and specifically children with its quality taste and high nutritional values.

“It is lightweight, has a slim, contemporary design to maximise shelf space, convenient, and fully recyclable with no compromise on the taste and quality that our loyal customer base has come to expect. The 235ml CartoCan delivers the same great flavour that has driven Delamere Flavoured Milk to the forefront of the flavoured milk sector.”

Closure specialist BERICAP is continuing its geographical expansion with new production facilities in Africa, South America and South East Asia. BERICAP has opened new plants in Nairobi (Kenya) and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and acquired production facilities in Lima (Peru) and Durban (South Africa). The company now operates 30 production sites in 25 countries in order to be close to its customers in terms of project support, logistics and services.

New production facility in Kenya

Kenya is the driving force of economic growth in East Africa and it plays an essential role in a regional supply context. The new 3,500 m² facility in Nairobi/Kenya makes the localization of the commercial business that has been built up over the last 8 years possible. Especially closures for the lubricant industry and for food and beverage manufacturers are produced there. BERICAP also exports closures manufactured at the Nairobi facility to ten African countries. “The new plant in Kenya is a milestone on BERICAP’s expansion journey in Africa. We are very pleased to have set up a strong team here in such a short timeframe, and our customers appreciate comprehensive local support and reliable product availability,” said Oguz Bursali, Managing Director BERICAP East Africa.

BERICAP in South Africa

BERICAP has recently invested in another plant in Africa and now has also operations in South Africa. The closure business that BERICAP acquired was a division of Nampak, a company with which BERICAP has had a technological partnership since 1998 for the South African market. The production facility in Durban started trading as BERICAP South Africa (PTY) LTD in March 2024.

BERICAP South Africa will be marketing the entire BERICAP closure portfolio, as well as the locally manufactured closures, in South Africa and neighboring countries.

“We are proud to be part of the BERICAP family and look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead. We have a great team that is committed to the business and its success. We will be focusing our efforts on various projects that will help us reach the high operational standards set by BERICAP. The support and training we are receiving from the broader team is incredible and is helping us become fully integrated into the global BERICAP network,” said Derek Coleman, Managing Director BERICAP South Africa.

BERICAP in Peru

Peru is BERICAP’s fourth production site in Latin America and allows good access also to Bolivia, the northern part of Chile and Ecuador – and thus a total of around 60 million consumers. Major companies in Peru have also signalized their interest in having a closure specialist with explicit research and development expertise in the region. This prompted BERICAP to acquire a 5,000 m² production facility in Lima with 50 employees. The BERICAP team in Peru is supported by the teams at BERICAP do Brazil and BERICAP Argentina. “The close collaboration between the various BERICAP teams and sites in South America, together with the pooled strengths and expertise, enable us to deliver added value to our customers as a provider of the best closure solutions and tailored services,” said Aurel Forgaci, Managing Director BERICAP do Brasil.

BERICAP in Vietnam

In September 2023, BERICAP chose Vietnam as another base in the prospering region of Southeast Asia and set up a production site there. This investment is a reflection of the region’s excellent market potential for modern closure solutions in the sectors of beverages and dairy products, food and chemical products. Production commenced in mid-October and the plant has passed all mandatory external audits. “Tamper-evident closure solutions are particularly relevant for manufacturers in the Vietnamese market who are keen to protect themselves against product piracy. BERICAP has the right solutions for these manufacturers, and the fact that they are also easy to use and therefore consumer-friendly explains why they are very much in demand,” said Swee Heng Lee, Managing Director of BERICAP Vietnam. The very positive response to BERICAP Vietnam’s participation in trade fairs such as PROPAK Vietnam confirms the high demand in this market for BERICAP’s solutions.

Only a few days to go until the International Cheese & Dairy Expo, and we can’t wait to welcome you to Stafford County Showground for a week of technology, cheese, dairy equipment and supply, along with Love Cheese Live on Friday and Saturday. It has been months of planning and now this week, it begins.

The Society of Dairy Technology kicks off with its cheese-themed Summer Symposium on Wednesday 26 June, at 12 noon. Then, an afternoon of technical cheese processing issues are explored, along with a free lunch served, in the Members’ Pavilion at the venue. The day ends with the Society’s annual dinner the same evening. The timing of the 2024 SDT annual dinner (key sponsor, Diversey) is perfect for those attending the International Cheese and Dairy Expo on Thursday 27 June.

The next morning, it is the cheese judging for the International Cheese & Dairy Awards, with thousands of cheeses on display and hundreds of judges, and our very own Expo, held at the same time. Our industry seminars begin at 9:30 with Ecolab, and wind up at 15:30 with Savencia and the Academy of Cheese. Not to mention the dozens of exhibitors on hand, ranging from Amcor to Pedrollo Distribution and Masterpack.

It promises to be a jam-packed day, full of information, cheese and interesting exhibitors of all stripes.

For those who want some star power, Adam Hensen (from Countryfile – who does not love a farmer?) will be at the SDT Dinner, while James Martin and AJ Pritchard will be at Love Cheese Live on Friday and Saturday, 28-29 June. Plus, there will be master classes from Arla, Lactalis and Nomad, with a lot of exciting things to do, eat and see over the Love Cheese Live weekend.

Almost too much to take in, but do come along as the Expo is free to attend. Don’t miss all the excitement in Stafford!

Epiros SA, one of the largest cheese-producing companies in Greece, under the frame of its sustainability strategy and its commitment to reducing its environmental footprint, proceeded to the replacement of the packaging of feta PDO and white cheeses from 180g up to 400g, limiting the use of plastic.

With the new, environmentally friendly packaging, Epiros achieves a 15% reduction in plastic. At the same time, the new packaging of feta and white cheeses in brine 400g have a new optimised shape, which ensures the reduction of discarded brine by 34% and atmospheric pollutants by 3.6%, compared to the previous packaging of the products*.

The main pillars of the ESG strategy that Epiros SA has set for the next five years, include the drastic limitation of waste and plastic use, as well as the reduction of carbon emissions and water consumption. The company’s objective is to contribute in tackling the climate crisis, as well as in the improvement of the quality of every person’s life.

The director of Epiros Production Units, Nikos Tsiliberdis, commented: “In Epiros we have now entered a new era where the main concern is the production of top quality & taste cheese products, with as little impact on the environment as possible. We know we still have lots to do. We are moving forward, step by step, towards the goal of zero carbon footprint.”

*It is noted that the above calculations have been based on an LCA study, according to the ISO 14040:2006 and ISO14044:2006 standards, and specifically for the scenario of the EPIROS FETA PDO 400 g packaging.

We have a properly full exhibition hall, so I almost can’t think of where all these cheeses are going to be put, but there is enough room for all of the exhibitors, the seminars and the cheeses at the Staffordshire County Showground next week on 27 June. Like a big holiday, it is almost here and we are beside ourselves with excitement at the prospect of exhibitors such as PDV Consultants, Organic Herd, Pedrollo Distribution Ltd, OptaHaul and 6ix Process Design Ltd (6PD) joining us, along with speakers such as AB Dairy, Infor, Meurens and Ever.Ag.

John Tobin, the speaker and president of MES at Ever.Ag, has over 25 years’ experience in the deployment of MES systems in the food and beverage industries. Some of these projects include automation of production processes on SCADA systems, distributed control systems, the definition, design and implementation of corporate MES strategies.

He regularly conducts MES consultancy exercises on behalf of Orbis for a range of clients including Diageo, Glanbia, Ornua, DFA and Baxter Pharmaceutical. He has led the initiative within Ever.Ag to specialise in the area of operational intelligence and digitization for food and beverage.

He holds a B.E. in mechanical engineering and is a member of the Institute of Engineers of Ireland. He has presented at a number of international conferences for MESA, ISA, WBF, Aspentech and has co-authored various publications in industrial journals.

Ever.Ag’s MES OPS 4.0 software is installed in multiple sites across the globe. The company’s mission is to create innovative AgTech solutions and services that empower agriculture, food, and beverage supply chains to feed a growing world. Ever.Ag’s MES Digitization solution monitors KPI’s to enable production of a consistent, predictable and quality assured product. It provides traceability from intake to finished goods incorporating a paperless pactory to digitise the plant floor.

Ever.Ag’s cheese yield optimisation module is designed to increase revenue margins. It is powered by AI/machine learning to provide a predictive model to improve outputs – for example, more cheese and better quality. Both measures increase revenue and margin by 1% to 3%. John Tobin will be speaking at 11:00am on 27 June in the seminars. Don’t miss it!

There is still time to register here!

Yes, it’s nearly here. In two weeks’ time we’ll be packing up down south and heading to Staffordshire County Showground, for the International Cheese & Dairy Expo. It promises to be an information-filled few days, ranging from the Society of Dairy Technology’s Summer Symposium and Annual Dinner on 26 June, to the International Cheese & Dairy Awards, to the Expo’s exhibitors and full day of seminars on 27 June.

It will be a few days not to miss out, if you want the latest about the industry. Who’s doing what, and what new equipment and products are available for the dairy processor. Cheese will be on offer, with thousands of entries and hundreds of judges.

There will be so many exhibitors to visit, so definitely wear your comfortable walking shoes for this, ranging from AB Dairy to Beijing Kwinbon Technology, and cheese makers including Belton Farms and Shepherds Purse. I was looking at Facchinetti equipment this week while I was in Italy, and thinking, I can spend more time examining it in Stafford in a few weeks’ time.

Personnel, automation, IT, enzymes, cheese making and every aspect of the dairy processing industry is on show here at the Expo. It is going to be a busy full day, I guarantee. That hall is packed full of amazing companies offering so much information (and cheese), it will be quite the event. Don’t miss it!

Grab your ticket and let’s see you at the Expo!

Krehalon B.V. UK’s shareholder, Kureha Corporation – a Japanese specialty chemicals and plastics manufacturer, has announced the full closure of the Krehalon BV business including the UK branch. The company, based in Kingston upon Hull, will be closing its doors on Wednesday, 31July 2024. The decision to close comes despite interest from several external parties to buy the UK Branch of the business.

Whilst this announcement is very disappointing for all of the team at Krehalon BV UK, the current focus is to clear stocks and to fulfil the remaining customer orders prior to the factory closure on Wednesday, 31 July 2024.

All of the equipment, land and buildings will be sold, and any interested parties are advised to contact Krehalon BV UK branch manager Chris Burdall (email address or mobile or both) soonest.

Krehalon B.V. UK thanks its suppliers and customers for their loyalty over the last half century.
