A study in New Zealand has found that adopting Milk Vat (Tank) Monitoring (MVM) technology can significantly increase the quality of milk stored on farm, including reducing total bacteria counts across a milk pool by almost 70%.

The study, carried out by the New Zealand Exchange (NZX) and based on project data provided by Fonterra® and Levno®, also found a 62% reduction in milk reaching critical scores and a 45% drop in insurance claims – highly contributed to by the 85% lower likelihood to claim insurance for refrigeration, agitation, or power related failures – by adapting the technology.

The technology could bring about the same improvements in the UK, dairy experts claim.

The rollout of MVM was launched by Fonterra in part to drive up milk quality, along with other on-farm and transport related benefits, and the study was supported by Fonterra to help quantify the improvement in milk quality.

Fonterra is a New Zealand dairy Co-operative owned by thousands of dairy farmers. The study involved introducing monitoring telemetry to the milk vats or tanks of Fonterra’s farmer owners and comparing the data, from a subset of almost 1200 farms, to the year prior to the technology being introduced.

The most popular MVM platforms used in the study were Levno’s Trim and Full Cream solutions, with the latter providing a 24-7-365 escalated human response service. This alerts farmers to potential problems with their milk within 10 minutes of detection and continues to monitor the data until the situation is resolved.

The study data was independently analysed by New Zealand Exchange (NZX).

It revealed that Levno’s Full Cream product reduced total bacteria counts by 69% compared to storing milk without MVM technology. Coliforms were down 42% as a result of installing MVM technology and insurance claims dropped by 45% in total.

Milk temperature was on average 12% lower using Full Cream, with 19% fewer collections made above 12oC and almost none above 14oC.

Milk quality was also assessed against Fonterra’s Milk Quality Index (MQI) which uses multiple data points to plot the degradation of the milk.

The measure is used to plan logistics and downstream processing of the milk, and to drive efficiencies in collection.

The study found that by implementing Levno’s Full Cream, farms achieved 22% fewer medium MQI scores, 26% fewer high MQI scores, and 62% fewer critical MQI scores.

According to NZX, the average value of ‘milk saved’ as a result of implementing MVM technology equated to NZD$12,863 per farm.

The objective of the study was to confirm that the introduction of MVM, technology, and Levno’s Full Cream solution, would drive material and sustainable improvements in milk quality.

Results found that after analysing the data provided, it is clear that the introduction of MVM technology improved the on-farm milk storage process and reduced the risk of degraded milk being supplied to Fonterra.

Multiple measures helped to corroborate this outcome – from the MQI measure during storage, milk temperatures at the time of collection, bacteria and coliform results, and the number of insurance claims by farmers. Importantly, there was also a significant reduction in the upper quartile of those measures with fewer outliers.

Additionally, the Full Cream solution further improves the quality of milk stored on farm and reduces the amount that may require disposal due to poor storage practices. The advance in technology has changed the way on-farm raw milk is monitored, and therefore protected.

The end result is better quality milk with significantly fewer instances of milk being registered as ‘critical’ on Fonterra’s MQI score.

James McCreery, national planning & dispatch manager at Fonterra, said: “We are providing tools to our farmer owners to continue to help them be the best dairy farmers in the world, and Levno is a tool for them to ensure they are supplying the best quality milk possible.”

He added one of the greatest strengths of Fonterra’s partnership with Levno has been the people.

“They brought in a lot of experience working with New Zealand farmers,” James said.

“They also have got the 24/7 support team. The people at Levno make a big difference.”

Matt Lynch, Levno’s country manager for UK and Ireland, said the study demonstrated how Full Cream brought major financial benefits to Fonterra’s farm suppliers.

For example, Levno’s Full Cream has saved almost 2.3 million litres across Fonterra farms during the latest 2023-24 milking season, averaging 6,800 litres per farm.

He said: “Full Cream helped the farmers who took part in the study produce higher quality milk and avoid the significant revenue loss associated with milk degradation and wastage.

“It also helped them avoid costly incidents where milk was not fit for collection and where an insurance claim was required for the loss. With each claim attracting an average excess of $500, that’s a huge saving.

“With dairy farmers in the UK facing a reduction in support payments, technologies like MVM offer new ways to bring efficiencies to dairy enterprises which will help drive the long-term sustainability of the industry.

“The ability to monitor milk quality in real time and resolve issues quickly means less degradation, less wastage and ultimately, a better return for producers.”

I’m taking a pause from watching the Paris Olympics and trying not to vent my frustration at the BBC inexplicably switching from a brilliant gold medal tennis match yesterday to shooting and so forth, to give you all some exciting news.

At Dairy Industries International, we are planning for the future.

Yes, the Dairy Industries Expo will be running again in the UK next year, with a view towards bringing to the industry what has been demanded from industry professionals – a dedicated event that encompasses the entire dairy processing chain, from processor to plate.

The Dairy Industries Expo will bring together the latest in processing machinery and services, packaging machines and materials, turnkey suppliers, quality control and assurance, ingredients, and logistics, creating the most comprehensive international dairy processing show, all under one roof.

Targeting the entire dairy processing and manufacturing industry, the event will provide a platform for meeting new customers and strengthening relationships with current clients. This is the industry’s own event, set to deliver all the latest innovations and developments – from butter, yogurt and milk, to ice cream, cheese and whey, and so much more.

This means, sadly, that we will not be working with our friends at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards next year, as we’re looking to cover the entire spectrum of dairy products and services with our event. Cheese is obviously a wonderful, diverse product type, but it is just one colour of the rainbow that is dairy.

So, keep an eye out on your inbox and on the socials, as we will be announcing the dates and venues coming up. Every year we plan to get bigger and better, and 2025 is set to be a great show for the expo and the industry. Don’t miss out!

The role of specialised workwear is key to the dairy industry’s requirements, Nick Warrick, sales manager at All Seasons Uniforms says.

The dairy industry is subject to stringent health safety regulations designed to protect both consumers and workers. Comprehensive safety protocols identify and prevent problems before they arise, helping industry players keep people safe, protect their reputations, and avoid prosecution.

As part of such mitigation efforts, dairy companies should implement effective process monitoring – the cornerstone of food safety within the industry. So, what processes require consistent oversight? Let’s look at the role of specialised workwear in upholding the industry’s high standards.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory across a range of work environments – especially those involving heavy machinery, environmental hazards, and food preparation. In the dairy industry, specialised workwear such as gloves, coveralls, aprons, slip-resistant footwear, and heat-resistant clothing, ensure workers stay safe while mitigating the risks of food contamination. These measures highlight the indispensable role of PPE in maintaining health and safety standards across diverse work settings.

Risks and hazards

Before establishing workwear protocols, dairy manufacturers must consider the full range of risks and hazards associated with processing, including:

 • Worker exposure to biohazards, such as bacteria and other microorganisms. Improper cleaning and use of workwear could also lead to product contamination that endangers consumers.
 • Physical hazards, including hot surfaces and heavy machinery. Robust, heat-proof clothing could help mitigate the risk of injury to workers.
 • Exposure to noisy equipment that could lead to hearing damage in the long term. Hearing protection will mitigate this risk to workers.
 • Slips and trips caused by milk spills. Slip-proof footwear represents a simple and effective solution to this problem.
 • Exposure to chemical hazards, including sanitizers and dangerous cleaning agents that may lead to respiratory illnesses and other health problems. Face masks and other protective equipment may help to mitigate such risks.
 • Product contamination by hair and other foreign objects. Hair nets and other coverings can prevent this problem and ensure manufacturers remain compliant with safety standards.

Failure to enforce regulations laid out by national, state or federal agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could result in a significant fine, reputational damage, or even the shutting down of operations. For example, recent FDA inspection guidance requires inspectors to assess manufacturers’ “gowning procedures,” clothing storage processes before and after issuance, hair protection procedures, and whether employees change into sanitised clothing before coming into contact with dairy products.

Other regulations to which dairy manufacturers will need to adhere in the US and internationally, include those set out by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). By staying on top of guidance and regularly reviewing their health and safety protocols, dairy manufacturers can ensure customers and workers always stay safe.

Flexicon Corporation, a privately-held firm specialising in bulk handling equipment and systems, is commemorating its 50th anniversary in 2024.

“Fifty years ago, my father had the foresight to solve a simple conveying problem. Today, our company provides solutions for food, chemical, and a range of other industries with everything from stand-alone equipment to automated plant-wide systems that solve the most difficult bulk handling problems,” says David R. Gill, CEO.

Founded by William S. Gill in 1974, the company began manufacturing “flexible screw conveyors,” a term coined by the company. Their simplicity, reliability and economy made them popular not only for basic conveying jobs, but also for demanding applications previously satisfied by more complicated and costly conveyors.

Flexicon advanced the application of these conveyors faster and further than any other manufacturer, being the first to introduce 115mm, 150mm, and 200mm diameter screw/tube combinations that elevated conveying capacity more than 10-fold in an 8-year period.

As the capabilities of its conveyors grew, so did the company’s expansion into pneumatic conveying systems and tubular cable conveyors, as well as upstream and downstream equipment including: bulk bag dischargers, bulk bag fillers, bulk bag conditioners, bag dump stations, drum/box/container dumpers and weigh batching systems.

The company now offers “Quick-Ship” delivery on popular models of flexible screw conveyors, bulk bag dischargers and bulk bag conditioners, boasts over 25,000 installations, and offers a lifetime performance guarantee on equipment and systems.

In addition to stand-alone units, the company began engineering and manufacturing automated material handling systems complete with sophisticated control packages produced in-house for multi-point bulk storage, processing, and packaging applications, many of which involve difficult-to-handle materials, sanitary requirements, and explosive environments.

A separate Project Engineering Division manages large-scale bulk handling projects across the chemical, mineral, food, dairy and pharmaceutical industries worldwide.

To meet demand for its full line of bulk handling equipment, the company has expanded its US and overseas manufacturing operations 14 times, including the doubling of its World Headquarters in Bethlehem, PA in 2015.

Flexicon now holds 36 patents in 13 countries, operates manufacturing plants in the United States, UK, Australia, and South Africa, and maintains sales offices in France, Germany, Spain, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

“We are extraordinarily proud of our history and our people whose inventiveness, skill and dedication have propelled our non-stop growth over the last 50 years,” says Gill.

The post Machinery World Group celebrates 25 years in business appeared first on Dairy Industries International.

]]>
Machinery World Group (MWG) was founded in 1999 with the vision of providing customers with the best new and used machinery for their bespoke operational needs and budgets – and 25 years on, that ethos continues to underpin all aspects of the business.

Initially, MWG had just one member of staff – founder Paul Crowter – and a strong belief that building relationships, taking the time to meet people face to face and genuinely listening and responding to their needs lies at the heart of a good business. Making and retaining connections by working in partnership with customers is key to the company’s success – and evidenced by the fact that the very first order Paul received was from Yarde Farm Ice Cream, in Plympton, Devon – and they continue to be customers today.

In the early years of building the group Paul travelled extensively around the world, attending exhibitions and meetings in South Africa, the Americas and Europe – and it is something he continues to do today, having recently returned from Australia.

This comprehensive knowledge and catalogue of contacts enabled Machinery World to develop and build their website – marking it as one of the first companies to upload and offer customers a range of machinery options from across the globe – and it remains the market leader today.

“We wanted to make buying used machinery more accessible, and easier for people to see what was available worldwide,” explains Paul. “Back in the early days of Machinery World over 90% of our business was focussed on sourcing and selling high quality second-hand machinery and acting as the UK agents for overseas suppliers.

“The website gave us the opportunity to match customers with the best machinery for their individual needs – underpinning our belief that customers should not have to ‘make do’ with something from down the road when we could find them the perfect solution for their business from anywhere in the world.”

It was this desire to swiftly resolve customers’ problems which led, in 2007, to two further growth areas in the business: the development of a comprehensive spare parts division, Parts Station and the launch of ROKK Processing, their own branded machinery range.

Parts Station, formerly known as Dairy Bits, gave customers instant access to a vast array of spare parts, coupled with the expertise of Machinery World’s engineers, who could quickly diagnose the problem – in person or over the phone – and get the required part sent out the same day.

Parts Station not only stocks all spare parts for ROKK models, it also offers a vast selection of OEM replacement parts for numerous other models of machines used across the food and dairy processing industry. If the part needed isn’t in stock, it will be swiftly sourced and shipped via Machinery World’s comprehensive supplier network – or made to order in the workshop as Paul explains:

“Machinery World’s engineers have extensive experience in the food and dairy processing industry, and I can’t think of a single problem they haven’t come across – and fixed. Over the years, they have frequently built custom replacements for parts no longer being produced – and this service has now been extended to support customer requests for new and improved ways of refining their produce.”

Since its conception in 2007, the ROKK range has grown and diversified to supply all areas of the food and dairy processing industry – and now accounts for over 25% of the business. The success and growth of the brand, which is now being built here in the UK as well as Italy and Turkey, lies in the way in which it has been designed to answer the needs of the food and dairy industry, as Paul explains:

“The ROKK brand was borne from years of listening to our customers and servicing their machines,” says Paul. “We discussed and evaluated usage and performance patterns and thus recognised the need for high quality, durable machinery which, whilst highly flexible, was also easy to use, with uncomplicated – and therefore simple to fix – operating mechanisms.”

The growth of the ROKK brand has been complimented by an increase in storage for both spare parts and an ever-increasing range of new and used machinery, along with growth of the Machinery World team to include sales staff and engineers whose expertise spans the prepared foods and chocolate industries.

“Five years ago, we diversified our range and skillset to better serve the wider food preparation industry, whilst ensuring we continue to provide an exemplary service to the dairy and ice cream producers,” explains Paul. “Our business was founded upon family values and the ethos of putting the customer first, and I’m delighted to say that all 18 members of the MWG team today continue to uphold and deliver those beliefs.”

MWG’s values and worldwide connections have inspired a relationship with Mercy Ships, a charitable organisation whose hospital ships deliver free surgery and sustainable healthcare to those most in need across the globe.

Visitors to the MWG stand C64 at PPMA will be able to find out more about both the work of the charity and the extensive range of new and used machinery offered by Machinery World Group.

Tetra Pak has announced the launch of the Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer, a groundbreaking new product designed to reduce product loss in liquid protein mixing. A direct response to the longstanding issue of foaming during the mixing phase of liquid food products, this innovative solution is set to improve food and beverage (F&B) manufacturers’ operational efficiency.

Traditional methods of mixing in liquid food production often encounter problems with air entrapment and foaming, resulting in lost product. Foaming alone is estimated to cost approximately €276,400 annually in typical food and beverage production scenarios,[1] making this mixer an important technological evolution for F&B manufacturers aiming to reduce their total cost of ownership, boost margins and improve product quality.

The Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer introduces a pioneering approach to mixing protein powders, which are a high value raw material. The new mixer combats foaming through a sophisticated design and multi-step process that includes reducing air ingress and employing advanced automation to optimise the mixing procedure. The result is a mixing process that is foam-free, which both minimises product loss and streamlines downstream processes, resulting in less downtime due to cleaning and equipment maintenance. Foaming also causes oxidation, which decreases shelf life and is often combatted by the addition of de-foaming agents like silicon oil. These additives are not needed with the Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer, leading to a product with fewer additives, reduced nutrient oxidation, and longer shelf life.

With 70% of consumers confirming that health has become more important for them over the last few years[2] , and the global market for active nutrition products expected to reach €80 billion by 2030,[3] protein-enriched food products, including powders, represent a growing market. The Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer is poised to help F&B manufacturers make the most of this lucrative product category, catering to both current demands and emerging opportunities.

From whey powders to plant-based and fermentation-derived proteins, the mixer can be deployed across a broad spectrum of industrial applications. Furthermore, its capacity to manage production ranging from small trial batches to large-scale outputs of up to 50,000 litres per hour ensures both adaptability and efficiency.

Fiona Liebehenz, vice president key components, plant solutions and channel management at Tetra Pak, comments: “This progressive new Tetra Pak Industrial Product Mixer was the result of a customer approaching us with serious foaming issues at their factory, disrupting production and compromising product quality. After promising initial tests in mitigating this issue, our highly skilled team in Denmark continued to refine our approach through meticulous and lengthy testing. The end result is a mixer with multiple relevant new features and a five-step process that together eliminates the root causes of foaming, reduces product loss, and solves the customer’s challenge. It has exceeded expectations by far, leading to an immediate order from the customer.”

She continues: “This is just one example of our commitment to taking care of the immediate needs of our customers, not only solving the problem at hand but creating a solution to improve future productivity and profitability. By working in this way, we support manufacturers to capitalise on a multitude of opportunities for continued growth based on exceeding expectations of their own consumers and tapping into new markets.”

Helping to protect pumps from running dry and detecting even the tiniest bubbles in flow control applications is a good example of where system engineers need to prevent unwanted and expensive downtime due to pump malfunction caused by unwanted gas inclusions. The development of the PAD20 sensor (a finalist in the recent Food Tec Awards) is a good example of the innovative range of sensors available from Baumer.

This ‘smart’ sensor helps to protect pumps from running dry whilst also helping to ensure maximum system performance and optimum use of resources. However, the PAD20 sensor is not only good at protecting pumps as reliable detection of gas bubbles also optimises the energy efficiency of cooling and heating systems in industrial applications. The sensor has the ability to measure air in all types of liquids regardless of whether liquids are pasty or viscous, reliably and fast. Another good example is where the sensor has helped a major dairy manufacturer solve the decades old problem of containers not being fully emptied.

In summary, PAD20 sensors are an effective, robust solution for detecting air and gas bubbles in any liquid or viscous media such as fruit preparations, cooling agents (DC>1.5) and particularly in harsh ambient conditions. Switching outputs are individually adjustable with IO-Link (2) for definition of switching range, or two-stage alarms (early warning) and they provide optional multi-colour process visualisation through 360º of switching state.

The nomination of the Baumer PAD20 ‘Bubble Sensor’ for the 2024 Pump Industry Awards once again recognises the contributions and abilities of sensor specialists Baumer to push the limits of sensor technology. The innovative PAD20 sensor was shortlisted for the international awards in two categories; ‘Product of the Year’ and ‘Environmental contribution of the Year’.

Precise and trouble-free operation under harsh conditions

The CLAWVAC B’s product features allow for precise and trouble-free operation even under harsh conditions and especially for processes involving particles, vapors and contaminated gases. The easy and intuitive handling of the CLAWVAC B is mainly due to its functional design which features a pair of claws that rotate in the cylinder with no contact or wear. Additionally, the pump stands out from conventional models through the use of stainless steel claws, and the coated and corrosion-resistant vacuum chamber is easy to clean.

Separate gearbox prevents oil contamination

“We’ve designed this pump with a separate gearbox to prevent oil contamination of the processes. The cooling of the CLAWVAC also contributes to extended operating times,” explains Tanvi Hulawale, product manager for rough vacuum at Leybold, Cologne. “Thanks to its modular design, end customers can quickly dismantle and clean the scoop chamber and silencer themselves with no outside help. It’s also easy to remove layers and flush the inside of the pump,” adds Tanvi Hulawale.

Less downtime, longer service intervals

CLAWVAC’s design ensures that individual parts can be replaced quickly when necessary, since users have easy access to all surfaces that come into contact with the media. The housing and claws, for example, can be disassembled with no need to readjust the gear control afterwards. The silencer not only reduces the noise level but also ensures that the condensate is drained off through the drain opening. All of these benefits have a positive effect on dirty processes, where the vacuum pump could previously only be cleaned and serviced by the manufacturer. Overall, the CLAWVAC B ensures short downtimes and long service intervals – 20,000 hours between oil changes and up to 48,000 hours between general overhauls.

Accessories to aid performance and maintenance

CLAWVAC B can be equipped with accessories like flushing kits, liquid separators and inlet filters. Flushing kits, when attached to the pump, clean the pump with external flushing agents. A liquid separator is the best choice for applications with high water content. Inlet filters are an important accessory in all applications to prevent pump damage from unexpected debris and dust. The inlet filter kits come as an “all in one” solution for customers to directly assemble the filters on the pump.

]]>
As the robotics industry continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible, the demand for high-performance, lightweight and integrated motion control products has never been greater. Moons’ Industries, a global leader in innovative motor technologies recently launched in the UK, is meeting this challenge head-on by offering an extensive range of motors designed specifically for robotic applications. Each motor is designed to address today’s automation and robotic applications unique requirements. Let’s focus on the three types of Moon’ motors available for these applications and their specific benefits.

Micro Motion Motors

Due to their unique construction Moons’ slotless motors are a departure from the traditional slotted stator in conventional brushless DC motors. Their innovative design brings several key advantages, including higher torque density, improved heat dissipation and significantly reduced cogging torque and torque ripple. These characteristics are particularly advantageous in robotic applications where precise motion control, efficient thermal management and smooth, virtually cog-free operation is paramount.

The latest generation of dexterous hands, such as those in humanoid robotics and prosthetics is where multiple Moons’ slotless motors are integrated directly into each finger, enabling independent control of individual joints and degrees of freedom. This level of granular motion control, combined with the motors’ exceptional torque density and power-to-weight ratio, allows the robotic hand to get closer to its human counterpart’s intricate movements, dexterity and accuracy.

Frameless Motor Technology

Robotics designers are continuously seeking ways to minimise system size and weight, without compromising performance or energy efficiency. Moons’ frameless motor designs provide a perfect solution by eliminating the traditional motor housing, allowing unparalleled torque density and integration flexibility within the tightest spaces.

Moons’ frameless, brushless BLDC motors consist of only the stator and rotor elements, resulting in an ultra-compact form factor seamlessly integrated into robotic joint assemblies, end-effectors and other space-constrained applications. Despite their minimal footprint, these motors boast an unrivalled torque-to-weight ratio, enabling high-speed operation and dynamic motion control capabilities – all essential for advanced robotic systems.

Another key advantage of Moons’ frameless motors is their ability to be customised and optimised for specific robotic joint configurations and which is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Moons’ work closely with customers, tailoring the motor’s dimensions, winding patterns and mechanical interfaces to create a truly integrated, high-performance motion control package that maximises torque density, whilst minimising inertia within the robotic joint assembly.

Harmonic Motion

These motors are compact, lightweight and can be combined with harmonic drive gearheads and other complementary components to create motion control solutions which are customised to meet specific application requirements. Harmonic drive gearheads are acknowledged for their compact design and exceptional torque transmission capabilities and play a significant role in enhancing the agility and accuracy of robotic systems. When integrated with frameless BLDC motors the combination of power density and flexibility offers the potential to create a synergy that has the potential to revolutionise the field of robotics. This optimises energy usage and reduces operational costs and environmental impact whilst enabling a compact design that enhances agility and versatility across industries.

Robotic and automation systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated, placing ever higher demands on the actuation components that power them. This is why Moons’ has developed best-in-class motors that combine unmatched performance, flexible design and tangible benefits, helping our customers stay ahead of the curve.
