]]>Initially, MWG had just one member of staff – founder Paul Crowter – and a strong belief that building relationships, taking the time to meet people face to face and genuinely listening and responding to their needs lies at the heart of a good business. Making and retaining connections by working in partnership with customers is key to the company’s success – and evidenced by the fact that the very first order Paul received was from Yarde Farm Ice Cream, in Plympton, Devon – and they continue to be customers today.
In the early years of building the group Paul travelled extensively around the world, attending exhibitions and meetings in South Africa, the Americas and Europe – and it is something he continues to do today, having recently returned from Australia.
This comprehensive knowledge and catalogue of contacts enabled Machinery World to develop and build their website – marking it as one of the first companies to upload and offer customers a range of machinery options from across the globe – and it remains the market leader today.
“We wanted to make buying used machinery more accessible, and easier for people to see what was available worldwide,” explains Paul. “Back in the early days of Machinery World over 90% of our business was focussed on sourcing and selling high quality second-hand machinery and acting as the UK agents for overseas suppliers.
“The website gave us the opportunity to match customers with the best machinery for their individual needs – underpinning our belief that customers should not have to ‘make do’ with something from down the road when we could find them the perfect solution for their business from anywhere in the world.”
It was this desire to swiftly resolve customers’ problems which led, in 2007, to two further growth areas in the business: the development of a comprehensive spare parts division, Parts Station and the launch of ROKK Processing, their own branded machinery range.
Parts Station, formerly known as Dairy Bits, gave customers instant access to a vast array of spare parts, coupled with the expertise of Machinery World’s engineers, who could quickly diagnose the problem – in person or over the phone – and get the required part sent out the same day.
Parts Station not only stocks all spare parts for ROKK models, it also offers a vast selection of OEM replacement parts for numerous other models of machines used across the food and dairy processing industry. If the part needed isn’t in stock, it will be swiftly sourced and shipped via Machinery World’s comprehensive supplier network – or made to order in the workshop as Paul explains:
“Machinery World’s engineers have extensive experience in the food and dairy processing industry, and I can’t think of a single problem they haven’t come across – and fixed. Over the years, they have frequently built custom replacements for parts no longer being produced – and this service has now been extended to support customer requests for new and improved ways of refining their produce.”
Since its conception in 2007, the ROKK range has grown and diversified to supply all areas of the food and dairy processing industry – and now accounts for over 25% of the business. The success and growth of the brand, which is now being built here in the UK as well as Italy and Turkey, lies in the way in which it has been designed to answer the needs of the food and dairy industry, as Paul explains:
“The ROKK brand was borne from years of listening to our customers and servicing their machines,” says Paul. “We discussed and evaluated usage and performance patterns and thus recognised the need for high quality, durable machinery which, whilst highly flexible, was also easy to use, with uncomplicated – and therefore simple to fix – operating mechanisms.”
The growth of the ROKK brand has been complimented by an increase in storage for both spare parts and an ever-increasing range of new and used machinery, along with growth of the Machinery World team to include sales staff and engineers whose expertise spans the prepared foods and chocolate industries.
“Five years ago, we diversified our range and skillset to better serve the wider food preparation industry, whilst ensuring we continue to provide an exemplary service to the dairy and ice cream producers,” explains Paul. “Our business was founded upon family values and the ethos of putting the customer first, and I’m delighted to say that all 18 members of the MWG team today continue to uphold and deliver those beliefs.”
MWG’s values and worldwide connections have inspired a relationship with Mercy Ships, a charitable organisation whose hospital ships deliver free surgery and sustainable healthcare to those most in need across the globe.
Visitors to the MWG stand C64 at PPMA will be able to find out more about both the work of the charity and the extensive range of new and used machinery offered by Machinery World Group.

]]>Initially, we launched Dairy Bits in 2006 and nurtured it into the reliable, established company it is today. However, the modern day calls for expansion which of course, we are happy to oblige! It is time to broaden our services and totally transform and enhance Dairy Bits Ltd.’ said Paul Crowter, managing director.
With the project starting in August 2023, it is almost ready to be revealed.
‘We have all worked together as a team during the process to create a totally authentic, user centric experience for our customers to provide the best service possible. Being so new to the business, I have loved being able to immerse myself so thoroughly into the project, getting to work so closely with all my co-workers and recognising their contributions to the project. It wouldn’t have been possible without each and every one of them.’ – Esther Crowter, trainee technical sales administrator.

]]>The duo joins the strongly established engineering team of Russell Jex, Martin Alexander and Chris Wilson and are ably supported by Gilbert DeVogel, who has moved into the role of engineer manager to coordinate and schedule the workload.
“These are exciting times for the Machinery World Group,” says managing director Paul Crowter. “We have significantly increased our range of new and used food and dairy processing machinery over recent years and feel now is the right time to expand our engineering team. Part of the Machinery World ethos is to always ensure we are there for our customers, providing advice, support and practical assistance when and where they need it – and our new appointments enable us to continue to provide exemplary service to customers old and new.”
Tertius, who originates from South Africa, began his career in 1995 with worldwide dairy company Lactalis – and first met Paul over twenty years ago when he travelled to the UK to source new machinery. Shortly afterwards, he set up his own company, Syfert Automation, designing and manufacturing food and dairy equipment for a range of different uses from production and preparation to packaging. He and Paul kept in touch and when Paul told him about his expansion plans, he was delighted to join the team.
“When running your own business, you accumulate an extensive amount of valuable experience, but you don’t get to share it,” says Tertius, a qualified artisan who is also trained in CAD software design. “By joining Machinery World, I get to meet new people, build meaningful relationships with customers and suppliers, and share my experience with the team. I am also widening my own knowledge – whilst I am the butter, milk and cheese expert, there’s a lot I can learn from the ice cream machinery masters in the team, and I’m really excited with my role as both teacher and student.”
Joe is equally enticed by the diverse range of machinery, old and new, that he is being trained upon.
“Every day is different at Machinery World – it’s fantastic to be so hands-on with the machinery and develop such a range of skills from wiring, refrigeration and pneumatics to servicing, checking for faults and getting out on site to meet the customers,” says Joe.
“At first, the machinery was quite daunting, it looks so complex,” he continues, “but when you get down to it it’s quite logical and easy to operate. It also helps that I am being mentored by some of the most experienced ice cream and dairy engineering professionals you could hope to meet – and everyone is so friendly and supportive, it’s such a genuine place to work.”
It is these family values that first attracted Gilbert DeVogel to join Machinery World over sixteen years ago as a helper in the warehouse. He has worked his way up through both college and the business, helping to establish and later run Dairy Bits, the spare parts branch of the company, before taking on his most recent role as Engineer Manager.
“Machinery World is a great place to work, everyone is wholeheartedly focused on helping each other and giving our customers the best service possible, which is why my new role has been created,” explains Gilbert. “I am basically the liaison bridge between the customers, the sales teams and the engineers, ensuring each and every job gets prioritised, distributed and completed. Now we have expanded our team and services, it makes sense for customers to have one clear point of contact for all their servicing, repair and maintenance needs.”
Gilbert coordinates the pre- and post-sales servicing of all machines, scheduling both the workshop and on-site activity.
