There is a shift afoot in global dairy trading. According to industry analysts Rabobank, “China’s monumental achievement in self-sufficiency in milk production, representing a staggering 11 million metric tons from 2018 to 2023, has left an indelible mark on the global dairy sector. The country’s whole milk powder (WMP) imports plunged from an average of 670,000 metric tonnes between 2018 and 2022 to a mere 430,000 metric tonnes in 2023,” says Mary Ledman, the dairy global strategist at the bank.

The global dairy trade is important for several countries that are small in size but large in dairy exports – Ireland and New Zealand, to name just two. However, as the landscape shifts, these exporters then have to look for new places to sell their products, Rabobank reports. “New Zealand accounts for less than 3% of world cow milk production but over 25% of global dairy trade. As the primary dairy exporter to China, it must now find alternative markets for the milk equivalent of nearly 150,000 metric tons of WMP. Almost 1.3 million metric tonnes of milk – equivalent to 6% of New Zealand’s annual milk production – is now in search of import destinations in the form of WMP, skim milk powder (SMP), milkfat, and cheese,” it says.

There are signs that New Zealand exports are starting to show up Algeria, which is usual EU and US export territory. However, as a larger importer, these countries will go up the list, as China’s self-sufficiency grows further. The trade pathways are shifting, and wherever you are in the dairy industry, get ready to move with it if you’re exporting.

And, to keep up with the dairy sector, don’t miss the International Cheese & Dairy Expo, held in conjunction with the 128-year old International Cheese and Dairy Awards on 27 June in Stafford. Right in the heart of cheese making and milk producing country, the awards and the Expo are not to be missed. See you there!

Food technology experts from GEA will showcase the company’s pioneering new Ecoclear I separator skid at the all new International Cheese and Dairy Expo at the Staffordshire County Showground in June.

Specifically designed for the removal of bacteria in milk and whey applications, the Ecoclear I is especially impactful in eliminating spores which might otherwise survive thermal treatment.

Also on the stand will be GEA’s hygienic valves and pumps product experts to discuss any queries relating to the company’s dairy technology and offering visitors a visual tour of the wider dairy range GEA has to offer. GEA will also introduce its new sustainable Add Better range of “resource efficient solutions.”

GEA has had a long association with the cheese show, supporting the event and sponsoring key awards. This year’s newly expanded show is an exciting step forward for the industry in the UK, bringing together the International Cheese and Dairy Awards and The Dairy Industries Expo, creating one big event dedicated solely to the dairy industry.

The new format has provided the perfect opportunity for GEA to showcase its versatile equipment. Paul Leeman, Sales Director at GEA’s Separation and Flow Technologies (SFT) unit commented: “The GEA SFT team are looking forward to connecting with others in the industry and sharing some of our innovative new technology, along with some of our wider dairy solutions. We are excited to be exhibiting this year and we’re anticipating a great show.”

Visitors to the show can find GEA at Stand 1325 at the International Cheese and Dairy Expo, 27 June, Staffordshire County Showground.

This time next month, we will be done with another International Cheese & Dairy Expo, the second one for us at Dairy Industries International, and the first one in conjunction with the International Cheese & Dairy Awards, at the centrally located and watertight venue, the Staffordshire County Showground. It promises to be a selection of magnificent cheeses from across the globe, along with the speakers at our day-long seminar.

One such speaker is Julia Chistova, CEO of France Process, who will be discussing the topic, “The acidification curve is the key to your best cheese” at 10:00. Julia created the engineering company France Process 17 years ago. Two years ago, France Process entered the UK market.

As pioneers in French cheese technologies and equipment, including delivery and installation, it brings a unique level of expertise to the table. Its approach is not about fitting your project into standard parameters, but about choosing the right equipment based on a firm’s specific technology. They are committed to excellence in its work and maintain a responsible, precise, and transparent relationship with its clients.

Eight years ago, Julia created a two-week Advanced cheese technology course in France with Actalia Produits Laitieres and EnilV. Two years ago, this course was made available in English, and it has since gained popularity among the UK and American clients, which is a testament to its quality and success.

Meanwhile, we also have a sparkling speaker lineup for the International Cheese & Dairy Expo.

At 15:30, Noemie Richard Stein and Tracey Colley, will both be speaking at the show.

Stein says, “The cheese industry is a big family of passionate people. A very unique world where a great human story is behind each single cheese. Part of this magic is coming from the gathering and sharing of experiences between each other, building up inspiration and creativity. This is only possible thanks to great occasions; amongst them the International Cheese and Dairy Awards is the one to not miss! This event offers a real opportunity of interaction between the actors of the industry, on both a professional and social level.”

Stein is “Maître Fromager” (Cheese Master) of the International Cheese Guild and an internationally leading figure in the industry of Cheese. She comes  from the French Alpes, a region known for its cheese tradition. After studying Cheese making in Canada and Argentina, Noemie graduated as a food engineer in 2011. After that she travelled to Chile and spent two years working in cheese factory, she created in 2013 the “l’École du fromage” (cheese school) which spread across Peru, Colombia and Argentina, training over 3,000 gastronomy professionals across the continent.

Her School of Cheese was sought after in the UK, which led to her moving to London in 2018. She then joined the Academy of Cheese as a training partner spreading cheese education among professional cheese users. Today she leads her Cheese education mission in Europe through her role as Head of Cheese education for the French cheese company Savencia, the continental cheese specialists.  Noemie is also a judge in many international  competitions, including the World Cheese Awards, Mondial du fromage and The British Cheese Awards.

Tracey Colley has worked in the cheese industry for over 20 years; as an award-winning deli owner, a top tier Account Manager and Events Organiser for fine food & cheese Distributor Harvey & Brockless and currently as Founding Director and Operations Officer of the Academy of Cheese. Tracey has judged at the World Cheese Awards for many years as well as the International Cheese & Dairy Awards and Artisan Cheese Awards.

Tracey strives to fulfil the Academy of Cheese’s mission to support cheese makers and cheesemongers with the aim of securing a thriving industry to operate in, with a captive audience of engaged consumers. Her passion is to ensure the Academy’s tiered educational programme will bring generations to come into the cheese industry.

Our International Cheese & Dairy Expo is shaping up and as we go into the final run towards the exhibition and cheese judging itself, here are a few things to keep in mind. It is a two-day event, with the Society of Dairy Technology’s summer symposium and dinner on 26 June. Then, on 27 June, there is the ICDA judging, the networking lunch, and our one-day exhibition and seminar. There will be a lot to do and plenty of people to meet and network with on the day. It is not one to be missed.

One speaker will be John Allen, the founder of Kite Consulting, which are recognised consultancy specialists in the UK dairy sector. He now is leading the corporate and global business for the AB Dairy business and works along the dairy supply chain with some of the UK’s leading operators and has linkages with international processors via the International Farming Community Network (IFCN).

He will be discussing, “Challenging Cheese: Futureproofing our industry,” at 14:00 on 27 June in the Seminar Theatre, which is located among the exhibitors in the hall. He has been recognised with a number of awards for his contribution to the industry.

There is a lot of free parking at the showground and there will be thousands of visitors attending. It is also free to attend, so make sure you sign up and get to the Expo.

I was away on a work trip last week, and a lot of things reminded me of our upcoming International Cheese & Dairy Expo show, which is on 27 June. First, it was seeing Ian Luxton of Belton Farm and also chairman of the International Cheese & Dairy Awards, in person. It is always a pleasure and he does so much work on the awards every year.

Secondly, there were a lot of presentations of varying types, but it was all about the confluence of both exhibitors and visitors that are allied with the dairy industry.

Which is what is happening on 27 June, with extra cheese and in the heart of the UK in Staffordshire. It is an event where many will attend, and more exciting keynote speakers will be announced shortly.

The international aspect of our show cannot be overemphasised. More than 5,000 cheeses from around the globe, plus speakers in the seminar who come from France, New Zealand, Scandinavia, and of course the UK. The exhibitors are truly worldwide, from China, the Netherlands, Ireland, the UK, Denmark and Belgium, to name just a few. It will be an event not to miss.

More than 5,000 cheeses are expected to be judged on 27 June, when the International Cheese & Dairy Expo opens for business at Staffordshire County Showground in the UK. With companies such as Chr Hansen sponsoring the Supreme Champion (last year, Shropshire Blue from Long Clawson Dairy took  the top spot) and AB Dairy sponsoring the stage where both the awards will be given and the Expo’s seminars will be hosted at, it promises to be a day full of networking, information and achievement overall.

For the show, the networking lunch starting at 12:30pm also promises to be eventful and social. Sponsored by Ecolab, it will be an opportunity for visitors to meet up and network, as well as enjoy a buffet lunch.

Our seminars at the centre stage in the halls and will begin at 9:30 with Mark Wright from Ecolab first up. Among the exhibitors will be Yorkshire Dama, whose founders, Razan Alsous and Raghid Sandouk, were recently seen on Channel 4’s show, Aldi’s next Big Thing. They came ahead of several other contestants to win a contract to supplying 400,000-pieces of their delicious Hello Mi Rolls, which are rolls of halloumi cheese wrapped in pastry for the supermarket. Having tried them myself, I think Aldi customers will really enjoy those. Yorkshire Dama is also increasing its staff and turns their five employees into a 16 person production line. Exciting times, so do come along and say hello to them and try their delicious cheese. It will be one of many wonderful samples on offer on the day. See you there.

From far and wide, exhibitors and attendees are travelling to attend the International Cheese & Dairy Expo, being held at Staffordshire Country Showground in Stafford, UK on 27 June. Processes ranging from testing to logistics will be on site to help the dairy industry streamline and make processing more efficient and sustainable.

Exhibitors and speakers range from China’s Beijing Kwinbon Technology to the merger of two companies, Chr Hansen and Novozymes, to form Novonesis.

Food safety with Beijing Kwinbon Technology

Beijing Kwinbon Technology Co, Ltd, established in 2002, is one of the earliest and largest high-tech manufacturer of food safety tests in China. “We are looking forward to meeting you in the UK on Stand 1463,” the firm notes.

It is able to provide more than 100 kinds of ELISAs and over 200 kinds of rapid test strips for detection of antibiotics, mycotoxin, pesticides, food additive, hormones added during animal feeding and food adulteration in dairy, cereal, honey, feed, meat and the seafood industries.

It aims to always to offer premium diagnostics and solutions in milk processing, in order to protect milk safely from farm to table. Currently, it supplies BTS, BT, BTSC and over 50 kinds of milk test strips to different countries. As a result, it offers its high reputation and good feedback in East Africa, Europe, South America and Southeast Asia. For more information, please visit www.kwinbonbio.com.

Now, Novonesis

Leveraging over a century of combined enzymatic and microbial expertise, two market-leading companies, Chr Hansen and Novozymes, have been combined to unlock biology’s full potential. I do enjoy living where we do in London. For a large city, it has a lot of green spaces.

This weekend, my giant teenager and I went down to the local ecology park on the Thames to help load up the rafts for nesting terns. It was actually sunny for a change and so we did a fair amount of lugging gravel and lifting onto these rafts, for the birds that migrate from Africa to settle in the neighbourhood.

We were joined by people from all over the metropolitan area, from Hackney to southwest London. In some ways, we were the closest, having strolled down the Thames Path from up the hill. But it was a delight to meet all these volunteers, who were interested in nature and helping our local ecology park.

Going out and interacting with other people is a good thing. Even though the offspring was on the phone, he still communicated with his fellow humans in real life. He chatted with the woman who has come here from Hong Kong and misses the food, at the park. He discussed birds with a nice man from west London. We talked football and got a workout.

In an article in the Times today, Libby Purves discusses how alienation and loneliness can affect anyone, not just the elderly. She notes, “The material public realm matters to individual happiness. It should encourage gathering, meeting, promenading and shared space, even during a cost of living crisis.” Regional theatres, local music enterprises, cheap transport and a diversity of places to congregate without having to buy a coffee are all arenas where we can all meet.

We all don’t live in big cities, but sometimes living in a big city is the loneliest thing, as we’re surrounded by people we don’t talk to. We are social animals, after all. And birds need a place to gather too.

Speaking of congregating, our Expo is happening on 27 June at Staffordshire County Showground. It will be a place of gathering and meeting up, both of old and new friends. It is free to attend, so come along and socialise and look at equipment and products that are central to our industry. Eat some cheese and chat. I promise, there will be no need to lug 25kg bags of gravel anywhere.

The International Dairy Federation launched its Women in Dairy Knowledge Hub, an initiative aimed at providing resources and fostering collaboration for Women Empowerment in the global dairy sector, on International Women’s Day, which was Friday 8 March. The hub features reference reports, e-learnings, spotlights on women, rapport summaries, factsheets, webinars, blog posts, and case studies. The launch marks a significant step towards creating a comprehensive knowledge repository and a supportive community for women in the dairy sector, the IDF says.

“Gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment are essential to achieving all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as ensuring food systems that are economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable. For generations, the dairy sector has been contributing to the empowerment of women. The new IDF Women in Dairy Knowledge Hub focuses on how the dairy sector is helping and can improve the empowerment of women to achieve broad social benefits,” says Caroline Emond, who is the first female director general of the organisation.

Let’s face it, dairy is an industry built on females. The animals are female, and the IDF estimates that on the 133 million dairy farms globally, over 600 million people live on these farms including 80 million women, around 37 million of whom head up their farms. So, no small matter. We matter in this industry and any new initiative helping women be further supported in this sector is a good call.

Don’t forget to visit https://fil-idf.org for more information. A YouTube video of the session is now available as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Mu5OkBzgR8.

In related news, our support for the industry is set to go live on 27 June, at the International Cheese & Dairy Expo. The dairy industry will gather together for the seminars and exhibitors, as well as the cheese judging and networking. Don’t miss out, and see you all there.

The exciting news just keeps coming with the upcoming International Cheese & Dairy Expo.

New Zealand-based MADCAP, a product of Contec Group International, has news for readers and for the Expo, which is being held 27 June at Bingley Hall, in the Staffordshire County Showground in the UK, in cooperation with the ICDA.

Last year, MADCAP welcomed Tomas Vera as the new regional director for Europe and the Americas. With a wealth of experience in the dairy industry and expertise in digital transformation and innovation, Vera has taken on a pivotal role within its organisation. His leadership and vision have added a fresh perspective to the team, reinforcing the commitment to excellence and innovation, the company says.

One of the significant changes in 2023 was the evolution of the MADCAP brand. The firm undertook a comprehensive brand transformation, allowing it to better align with its core values and mission. This transformation extended to every aspect of the brand, from visual identity to messaging. The result is a more comprehensive, dynamic, and client-centric MADCAP. The ability to swiftly adapt to disruptions indicates an agile supply chain.

Like many others, the dairy industry faces unforeseen challenges such as supply chain interruptions, changing regulations, and sudden shifts in consumer preferences. An optimised supply chain can quickly identify any disruptions and respond in real time. This adaptability minimises downtime, reduces financial losses, and ensures products continue to reach consumers consistently.

MADCAP also has a number of new clients to implement from a number of countries, so there is another busy year ahead for the MADCAP team. Its daily mission is to provide a solution that continues to help the dairy industry optimise its dairy supply chain and achieve its sustainability goals.

Tomas Vera will be present on the booth during the Cheese Expo to engage in discussions about the processes, challenges, and innovations influencing the dairy industry. He will share how MADCAP can assist in navigating these dynamics. With extensive expertise in digital transformation, he is also happy to discuss this further.

I was recently discussing agriculture and livestock farming with someone who seemed to believe that cows were a source of pollution for the planet. I did mention that as an industry that has been around for about 10,000 years, there may be a reason why humans continue to raise livestock and milk them. Let’s face it, we all live in houses fired up with gas boilers and drive around in cars that burn fossil fuels, but yes, let’s look at the methane emissions of cattle. Never mind that methane’s half-life is measured in a dozen years, versus hundreds for other types of emissions.

I mean, even the mobile phones we all cannot do without, and where people Google for information, have some pretty suspect mining practices to obtain the metals to make the batteries that run them. Not to mention the rest of the technology attached to it, or even the electricity it runs from.

But let’s get rid of the cows, who are basically minding their own business and are the original vegans. Eating grass on land that humans can’t farm, and turning it into food for all, providing families globally with incomes and livelihoods. Talk about eating one’s own. No wonder the farmers are protesting. To say they feel unappreciated for feeding the planet is an understatement.

That being said, I received a very nice reminder last week of the noble history of our industry, with a box full of delicious cheese from Bradburys, which is celebrating its 140th year this year. The company sources cheese from around the UK and globally, and it will be in full celebration mode at the International Cheese and Dairy Expo on 27 June at the Staffordshire County Showgrounds.

Come along and enjoy the fruits of many cheese makers’ labours, and take a look at what the whole dairy industry has to offer, at the Expo. It promises to be a great couple of days out in the heart of the UK.
