FrieslandCampina subsidiary Frisian Flag Indonesia (FFI) opened its new dairy factory in Cikarang, West Java in July. The construction involved an investment of €257 million. With this, FrieslandCampina is making a record investment in its international production network, the Dutch co-operative says. The new production facility aims to meet the growing domestic demand for dairy products.

CEO Jan Derck van Karnebeek, said, “This new production facility, our largest investment in our international production network ever, will serve as a central hub for Southeast Asia. It is a testament to our dedication to providing affordable, high-quality, and nutritious dairy products for current and future generations in Indonesia and the region, produced in harmony with people and the planet. With this, Frisian Flag Indonesia supports the government’s efforts to improve prosperity in the region.”

The entire plant spans 25.4 hectares, equivalent to 35 soccer fields, and is processing 400,000 kilogrammes of fresh milk daily. It will produce 700 million kilogrammes of dairy products annually, with the potential to grow up to one billion kilograms. It is built in line with the targets of FrieslandCampina’s Climate Plan, and will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the dairy says. Green innovations such as biomass boilers, wastewater recycling, and a roof with solar panels will together achieve a 45% reduction in carbon emissions, a 22 percent saving on electricity, and a 25% reduction in water consumption. Additionally, the greening initiatives include the use of more than 55,000 sustainable pallets.

I’m taking a pause from watching the Paris Olympics and trying not to vent my frustration at the BBC inexplicably switching from a brilliant gold medal tennis match yesterday to shooting and so forth, to give you all some exciting news.

At Dairy Industries International, we are planning for the future.

Yes, the Dairy Industries Expo will be running again in the UK next year, with a view towards bringing to the industry what has been demanded from industry professionals – a dedicated event that encompasses the entire dairy processing chain, from processor to plate.

The Dairy Industries Expo will bring together the latest in processing machinery and services, packaging machines and materials, turnkey suppliers, quality control and assurance, ingredients, and logistics, creating the most comprehensive international dairy processing show, all under one roof.

Targeting the entire dairy processing and manufacturing industry, the event will provide a platform for meeting new customers and strengthening relationships with current clients. This is the industry’s own event, set to deliver all the latest innovations and developments – from butter, yogurt and milk, to ice cream, cheese and whey, and so much more.

This means, sadly, that we will not be working with our friends at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards next year, as we’re looking to cover the entire spectrum of dairy products and services with our event. Cheese is obviously a wonderful, diverse product type, but it is just one colour of the rainbow that is dairy.

So, keep an eye out on your inbox and on the socials, as we will be announcing the dates and venues coming up. Every year we plan to get bigger and better, and 2025 is set to be a great show for the expo and the industry. Don’t miss out!

We are excited to announce the Dairy Industries Expo is set to take place in autumn 2025. This exhibition meets the longstanding demand from industry professionals for a dedicated event that encompasses the entire dairy processing chain—from processor to plate.

The Dairy Industries Expo will bring together the latest in processing machinery and services, packaging machines and materials, turnkey suppliers, quality control and assurance, ingredients, and logistics, creating the most comprehensive international dairy processing show under one roof.

Targeting the entire dairy processing and manufacturing industry, the event will provide a powerful platform for meeting new customers and strengthening relationships with current clients. Visitors will experience cutting-edge dairy innovations and equipment presented by exhibitors, and they can participate in informative workshops and seminars.

The event will feature an exciting programme of keynote presentations covering all sectors of the dairy industry, with free-to-attend sessions on the exhibition floor. Additionally, a series of engaging workshops will ensure that Dairy Industries Expo is much more than just a trade show.

Organized by the leading industry journal Dairy Industries International, alongside Bell Publishing’s experienced events team, the Dairy Industries Expo was launched in response to the industry’s call for an international event specifically targeting their needs.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to be part of the Dairy Industries Expo, where the future of dairy processing will be on full display.

More than just a trade show, this is the event that will shape the industry’s future.

Sadly, we will not be working with our friends at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards next year, as we’re looking to cover the entire spectrum of dairy products and services with our event. Millbrook Dairy, a cheese and butter business founded in 2019 by David Evans and Kevin Beer, has announced plans to travel from its headquarters in Bideford, Devon to the Orkney Islands in Scotland, on a Tuk-Tuk (sporting a giant wedge of cheese on the roof), to raise funds for Children In Need.

Co-founders and directors of Millbrook Dairy Company, David Evans and Kevin Beer, plan to visit the major UK cheese producers in England, Wales and Scotland along the way, starting with Parkham Farms just nine miles up the road, and finishing at Kirkwall Creamery on the Orkney Islands.

The trip, which the team plans to complete in nine days during September this year, will include 22 stops and a total of 1386 miles.

At each visit, David and Kevin hope to meet the owners and some of their team and have the opportunity to taste and grade their cheese. The team plans to film the whole trip and post social media updates and contact local media after each visit, so followers can follow their daily progress.

The Tuk-Tuk will be fully Millbrook Dairy Company branded and be highly recognisable as it traverses the country.

Kevin Beer, co-founder and director at Millbrook Dairy Company, said:

“As we celebrate five years of Millbrook Dairy this year, we wanted to do something different and something where we can give something back and so our crazy Tuk-Tuk idea is now going to happen.  It will be an incredible adventure.

“We are extremely excited about our trip; we know it’s going to be a real challenge for us, but it’s going to be great fun too.  If the trip goes well, we may do another one next year – maybe across France, Italy or even the USA.

David Evans, co-founder and director at Millbrook Dairy Company, added:

“We are hoping to raise significant funds for Children in Need which is an amazing charity that helps fund thousands of projects in every corner of the UK. Our family and friends are really excited to sponsor us, and we are confident some of our wonderful suppliers and customers will support us too.”

The Tuk-Tuk team has set up a JustGiving page to raise funds for Children in Need.

Welsh organic dairy co-operative Calon Wen is looking to increase its output by offering financial incentives for farmers to switch to organic milk production.

Launched in 2000 by four farmers, Carmarthenshire-based Calon Wen Organic Milk Co-operative has grown to become one of the UK’s leading organic brands with a group turnover of approximately £12.5 million.

The company’s dairy-product arm produces the popular Calon Wen branded milk, butter, and cheese, which are sold in independent and multiple retailers across England and Wales.

Calon Wen is forecasting a minimum flat rate price of 50ppl for 2025/2026 with no seasonality deductions and is looking to recruit established organic producers and farmers considering converting to organic dairying.

The co-operative has 25 organic dairy farmer members spread throughout Wales, producing around 20 million litres of milk annually. Calon Wen has strict criteria: the milk its members supply must contain 4% butterfat and 3.15 % protein, with a Bactoscan count below 50 and a Somatic Cell Count (SCC) cell count below 300.

Calon Wen’s managing director Dai Miles, a dairy farmer, said, “We take a regenerative organic approach that focuses on soil health and the full farm ecosystem. Therefore, as we approach our 25th anniversary, we are very confident in the future of organic dairy farming and buoyed by consumer demand for organic dairy products.

“As a business, we have to plan for the future. Many of our members are now second-generation organic farmers, but others are looking to retire, and therefore, there is an opportunity for new recruits to the co-operative – whether established organic farmers or those looking to convert – to keep our loyal consumers well-serviced with Calon Wen’s organic milk and dairy products.”

In addition to the financial and environmental benefits of organic production, Calon Wen’s membership expansion is an opportunity for new entrants to farming to get a foothold in the industry. Also, the company believes converting to organic production could solve many farmers’ concerns about complying with strict NVZ regulations.

As part of its recruitment drive, Calon Wen is offering incentives to farmers considering converting to organic milk production and enlisting existing members to help with the process.

The co-operative is introducing an in-conversion loan scheme for recruits, and also an incentive for members who successfully recruit a new farm.

Dai said, “We understand some farmers may be concerned about the cost of converting to organic production – especially as there isn’t currently any government support available. Therefore, Calon Wen will offer them an interest-free loan of 2ppl towards the cost of their last year of conversion, with the loan to be paid back during the first two years of production.

“Furthermore, Calon Wen is committed to supporting our members through the conversion process. We are offering our extensive agricultural expertise and in-depth knowledge of the organic sector to make the necessary changes as easy and seamless as possible for our farmers.”

Pembrokeshire farmer Hefin Evans, who farms at Nant yr Helygen Fawr, Eglwyswrw, with his wife and two adult sons,  joined Calon Wen in 2009.

He said, “When I converted to organic production, joining Calon Wen was the natural choice. I have been dairy farming all my life, and Calon Wen were on hand with their expert knowledge and support to help me navigate the changes needed to move to an organic system.

“I share Calon Wen’s ethos of natural and sustainable farm management practices that benefit the environment and animal welfare and contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

“Being part of the co-operative also means I have an input into the price I receive for my milk and the development of the Calon Wen brand – which helps secure the future of not only my farm but the livelihood of other family farms.”

Although a predominantly Welsh-focused business, Calon Wen recruits members on the English border and supplies processors and retailers in Wales and England.

The company’s primary target areas are in west and north Wales, but Calon Wen would also like to hear from potential members and groups of farmers in England.

Farmers who would like to know more about the benefits of converting to organic dairy production can find expert advice and information by visiting the Calon Wen at the forthcoming Royal Welsh Show (22-25 July), in Llanelwedd.

The Calon Wen stand is located below the Main Ring grandstand and there will be drop-in sessions for interested farmers between 12pm and 3pm on the Tuesday and Wednesday of the show (23 and 24 July).

Dai said, “We would welcome the opportunity to chat with anyone interested in joining Calon Wen and to tell them about the holistic and environmental benefits of organic farming and the positive business impact that can be made by converting to organic dairying.”

A creamery that has been producing Stilton since 1780 is due to close its doors with the loss of 60 jobs. Tuxford and Tebbutt in Melton Mowbray, UK is owned by the multinational farmer co-operative Arla, which has been trying to sell the creamery as an ongoing concern, BBC Farming Today reports. It blamed the closure on what it says is a decline in the speciality cheese market with its featured cheese Stilton.

Dairy industry analyst Chris Walkland explained what’s happened to the BBC. “It’s very small compared to modern factories and doesn’t have the economies of scale the newer plants have. It’s very indicative of what’s happened in the larger market.

“Stilton has always been an elite, seasonal product, and the cost of living crisis has come along with Stilton and elite cheeses falling into the discretional spend category.”

He further says, “Not only that, but a lot of Stilton is also exported, and then we come into the realm of macropolitics, and Brexit, and trade barriers, and veterinary certificates – the cost of exports have simply soared. That’ll be another reason why sales of Stilton have been challenged.” Another factor is that a lot of other different blue cheeses have sprung up, and that has eaten into Stilton’s sales.

Stilton is only made in the three counties – Derbyshire, Nottinghamshite and Leicestershire – because it’s a PDO product and made by only six creameries. Arla is a big pan European company and have invested a lot in the UK, he further notes. “This investment in a niche factory that produces a niche, seasonal doesn’t fit with their overall strategy.”

Müller UK & Ireland is inviting applications for the third cohort of its Next Generation initiative as the business continues to drive supply chain resilience and reduce carbon emissions.

Müller Next Generation, first launched in 2018, is a three-year programme for Müller farmers between the ages of 25-40, which aims to develop and enhance the skills of 25 ambitious young farmers, helping to provide them with the foundations to build sustainable and profitable dairy businesses.

It provides Müller dairy farmers with tools and support to help further improve supply chain collaboration, animal welfare, responsible sourcing and reductions in environmental impact.

The initiative forms part of Müller’s overall Sustainability Action Plan, driving progress against its goals to reduce emissions on supplying farms by 30% by 2030.

Müller Next Generation includes tailored workshops, farm visits, keynote speakers, and visits to Müller sites. Focus areas include the environment and sustainability, leadership and delegation, market analysis, succession planning, marketing, communication and business improvement planning.

The group will meet three times per year, enabling the farmers to share best practice and knowledge. Applications close 26 July 2024, with the first meeting taking place in the autumn.

Richard Collins, head of agriculture at Müller Milk & Ingredients said:

“As we work to create a better future for the dairy sector, we need to continue to tackle carbon emissions, secure the next generation of talent and drive supply chain resilience.

“Through our Müller Advantage programme we incentivise farmers to tackle the issues which we know are important for our customers and consumers and the Next Generation initiative is further evidence of the action we’re taking to make a difference.

“We know from the first two cohorts that there are a number of dairy farmers in the UK who have a great talent and passion for the industry, and we’re excited to welcome applications for the next round of future elite dairy farmers.”

Jolyon Bennett, one of the current cohort of Next Generation farmers, said: “With the pressures faced by farmers over the last 12-18 months, I don’t think I could have survived without the resources available to me as part of the Next Generation programme. The connections I’ve made and the detail I’ve learned, particularly the financial side, have been invaluable.”

Another of the current participants, Matthew Davies, said: “The programme has taught me so much. It’s been a real eye-opener to see new faces and learn new ideas and perspectives from around the country, discovering the different ways we all work to achieve the same common goal.

“It’s also been a real morale-booster for me. Getting away from my own farm to visit others, and coming back with a brand-new take on things. I’d encourage anyone thinking about taking part to just go ahead and get an application in.”

Young Müller farmers who meet the criteria and are interested in applying can do so by contacting their farm supply manager.

Two pioneers in global sustainability certification, FoodChain ID and ReSeed, announce the launch of a new industry-leading ReSeed Soil Carbon Methodology for carbon market initiatives. The Soil Carbon Methodology rewards farmers not only for maintaining existing soil organic carbon built through sustainable farming practices, but also for the removal and storage of additional carbon dioxide emissions by soils. The Soil Carbon Methodology is the first programme on the market to offer these two key benefits, while also making voluntary carbon markets accessible for vulnerable and small farmers to scale agriculture climate initiatives worldwide.

Following their partnership announcement in November 2023, FoodChain ID and ReSeed have sought to increase transparency in the measurement and verification of regenerative agriculture practices for the agri-food supply chain. With a carbon credit verification standard at the center of the collaboration, ReSeed and FoodChain ID incentivize, measure and verify the progress of carbon sequestration and storage through regenerative agriculture practices.

Dr. Ruud Overbeek, senior vice president for Corporate Development and Strategic Relationships at FoodChain ID explains: “Our partnership with ReSeed has recently shown successful verification of conservation at the farm level to combat Amazon deforestation. This demonstrates that practices of sustainable farming can not only be measured, but also incentivized. Carbon credit accessibility is providing tangible benefits to farmers, who require financial support to invest in sustainable farming practices.”

The new ReSeed Soil Carbon Methodology embraces the latest scientific innovations for soil organic carbon stock measurement at scale. According to Vasco van Roosmalen, CEO at ReSeed, “The application of the Methodology will be made possible through ReSeed’s Digital Climate Impact Platform and the results will be validated and verified by FoodChain ID to ensure scientific rigor, consistency and transparency in project quantification methods, while also accommodating implementation across diverse geographies and farm operations.” The Methodology is benchmarked against legacy carbon methodologies like VERRA’s VM0042. Soil carbon projects will undergo annual independent verification by FoodChain ID.

The ReSeed Soil Carbon Methodology offers unique benefits to farmers and addresses greenhouse gas emissions by promoting soil health as a fundamental principle. Unlike many existing methodologies on the market, the ReSeed Soil Carbon methodology does not exclude farmers based on farm size or location. Emily Urban Cordeiro, PhD, sustainability technical director at FoodChain ID and soil expert comments, “In partnership with ReSeed, we are leading carbon market innovation by recognizing the importance of farming systems. The partnership recognizes and rewards farmers for their existing carbon assets, whether in soils or trees, as well as their ongoing achievements in sequestration.”

Pembrokeshire Creamery has officially launched its cutting-edge milk processing facility in Pembrokeshire, marking a significant milestone in its mission to bring ‘fully Welsh’ milk to Welsh consumers.

Launched on 2 July 2024, the dairy is the only BRCGS-accredited liquid milk facility in Wales, meaning it is the only facility able to supply major retailers in Wales with Welsh milk. By removing the need for Welsh milk to be transported to bottling plants in England, Pembrokeshire Creamery is reducing food miles, increasing supply chain efficiency, creating new skilled jobs, and supporting local farming communities.

Pembrokeshire Creamery, which has created around 80 new jobs, has the capacity to bottle more than a million litres of milk a week and has recently announced major deals to supply own-branded milk to Asda and Lidl stores across Wales. When the dairy reaches full capacity, it will be able to supply around 2 million litres of milk a week.

The development of Pembrokeshire Creamery was initially supported by the Welsh Government and Pembrokeshire County Council when they formed a joint venture to create the Pembrokeshire Food Park. This was instrumental as it created the plots and infrastructure required (drainage, water, and power) for Pembrokeshire Creamery to locate its new state-of-the-art dairy.

Subsequent Welsh Government support was awarded with £5 million grant funding through the Food Business Investment Scheme and an additional £1.4 million of grant funding from the Food Business Accelerator Scheme.

Funding support has also been provided by HSBC and to date, nearly £20 million has been invested in the site to process high-quality Welsh milk that is farmed, bottled, and sold in Wales.

The company recently announced plans to support the development of a second milk processing line and automated trolley fillers, meeting the growing demand for locally sourced Welsh milk while ensuring the industry’s future sustainability.

Commenting on the opening, Mark McQuade, managing director of Pembrokeshire Creamery Ltd said:

“This has been a great opportunity to celebrate our early successes and all that means for the people that we’ve employed and the dairy farmers who we work with. We’re creating new markets with major retailers for authentic Welsh milk which in turn is helping us complete our mission to deliver sustainably sourced Welsh milk, bottled right here in Wales while offering a fair and transparent price to farmers.

“We are already committing to more investment and increasing our capacity – and we would like to thank all of the people locally, our staff and suppliers, who have supported us as we’ve built and opened our new state-of-the-art facility,” he said.

Huw Irranca-Davies, cabinet secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, said:

“I am delighted that the new Pembrokeshire Creamery has started processing Welsh milk for Lidl and Asda. This new facility, supported by Welsh Government Rural Development investment underlines the commitment of the Welsh Government to the dairy sector in Wales. This investment ensures that milk which previously had to be transported to England is now processed in Wales. As a result, Welsh consumers will now be able to buy Welsh milk, produced in Wales.

“This commitment is part of our vision for achieving growth and productivity improvement which benefits the workforce, people and society. It also supports the industry to reach high levels of sustainability, raising the Food and Drink industry’s reputation in Wales, the UK and overseas,” he said.

Led by an experienced team, Pembrokeshire Creamery emphasises fair pricing for farmers who tirelessly produce high-quality Welsh milk. Their commitment extends to paying a fair market-related price for dairy farmers, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare, which is consistent with their aspiration to be at the forefront of the dairy industry.

At the heart of Pembrokeshire Creamery’s mission lies a commitment to sourcing 100% of its milk from Welsh cows, reducing food miles, and supporting local farming communities. Their ultimate goal is to be the leading supplier of Welsh milk.

Food Union, an international ice cream producer and distributor, has launched its 2024 high season novelties. A total of 55 new ice cream products have been developed across six European markets.

The products cater to the latest consumer trends, the company says. “Embracing the demand for healthy indulgence, the new offerings include lighter alternatives with low sugar and low fat, while also introducing innovative textures like jelly-like consistency for more convenient on-the-go snacking. Vegan-friendly sorbets provide refreshing options for all, and adult-themed, alcohol-flavoured ice creams cater to sophisticated palates. Exotic fruits and savoury berries continue to captivate, while juicy sauce fillings and twirls add excitement to each bite. Salted caramels and nuts remain popular for their soothing flavours, and classic favourites make a nostalgic return,” Food Union notes.

The products will be seen in six markets – Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Denmark, Norway and Romania. They include: Estonia, which offers Premia 40% less sugar ice cream with mango-passion filling on a stick, 50g/100ml and Premia 40% less sugar ice cream with raspberry filling on a stick, 50g/100ml. Meanwhile, in Latvia, new products include Tio Vēsma wafer cup small apple 0.7% 0.12l/0.075kg and Tio Vēsma wafer cup small lemon 0.7% 0.12l/0.075kg. In Denmark, it will be Underground Mango-Lime – mango ice cream with lime limonade coating on a stick, 83 ml, with only 50 kcal per piece, and Underground cone with salty caramel ice cream at 151 kcal per piece.

Food Union has also created a range of “adventurous” ice creams in different shapes, sizes and designs – from crazy flavoured creamy ice cream to refreshingly jolly juice lollies. Ehrmann, a German dairy company, is expanding into the  UK further with the acquisition of Trewithen Dairy. The move – the latest in Ehrmann’s over 100-year history – sees two family-owned businesses come together to bring a new portfolio of tasty dairy products to UK consumers, the companies say.

Ehrmann will expand Trewithen’s facilities to open a state-of-the-art UK production plant at the site in Glynn Valley, Cornwall. Expected to open in 2026, Ehrmann pudding products distributed in the UK will be produced at the facility; expected to account for 15% of Ehrmann’s global sales each year.

The Cornish dairy plant will start producing the full range of Ehrmann dessert products, such as High Protein and Grand Dessert. Ehrmann dairy products are sold in over 75 countries around the world, from seven international production sites and nine international sales offices; generating over 1.1 billion euros each year. In addition to its long term commitment to grow sales of Trewithen’s portfolio of branded and own-label dairy products, Ehrmann will also make a significant £20 million investment in the dairy’s processing capacity and capabilities.

Christian Ehrmann, chairman of Ehrmann SE. explains, “Ehrmann has enjoyed success in the UK over the last two years working with major supermarket chains to bring new dairy tastes to consumers. The acquisition is highly significant as it opens up local UK production; enabling us to reduce the carbon footprint and guarantee the freshness of our products. Choosing Trewithen’s impressively high-quality Cornish milk production, we’re delighted to bring German product innovation together with the very best of British milk.”

Ehrmann’s acquisition of Trewithen will bring together the leadership teams of both family businesses. Both are long established, well respected, family-run companies that share a passion for producing a wide range of high quality dairy products which have at their heart naturalness, provenance and a commitment to sustainability. Trewithen Dairy at Greymare Farm in the Glynn Valley has been owned by the Clarke family since 1976. The dairy farmers switched to crafting dairy products there in 1994, sourcing milk, cream and, more recently, butter and yogurt from local cows to sell across the UK.

The acquisition will secure the jobs of over 260 people currently working at Trewithen Dairy. In addition, the expansion of the production plant will give dairy farmers in the region a major, stable purchaser for Cornwall’s milk supply, paying a competitive milk price based upon a guaranteed premium.

Paul Berne, CEO of Trewithen Dairy, adds, “We’re delighted that we’re able to expand our offering, create more jobs in the local economy, and further bring the joy of quality Cornish produce to more tastebuds across the UK. The new products are already proven in other markets, so it’s great to be producing them with excellent British milk to be enjoyed by more British tastebuds.”

Since 2022 Ehrmann has been successfully selling a range of products in the UK through major supermarkets Aldi, Morrisons, Iceland and more recently, COOP. As Ehrmann’s UK-produced range expands, the dairy foods producer will increase the distribution of its products in the UK.

The completion of this transaction is part of the company’s overall network optimisation strategy, and one of the pillars of its global strategic plan, the firm says.

“This sale reinforces our roadmap for long-term success in Australia and demonstrates our agility in further adapting our manufacturing footprint to focus on higher-value growth opportunities,” said Lino A. Saputo, chair of the board, president, and CEO.

As part of the sale, Saputo is maintaining its valued farmer relationships in Australia and will continue to have fresh milk products processed at the two manufacturing facilities. The employment of approximately 48 people across the two sites was transferred to Coles Group Limited.

Only a few days to go until the International Cheese & Dairy Expo, and we can’t wait to welcome you to Stafford County Showground for a week of technology, cheese, dairy equipment and supply, along with Love Cheese Live on Friday and Saturday. It has been months of planning and now this week, it begins.

The Society of Dairy Technology kicks off with its cheese-themed Summer Symposium on Wednesday 26 June, at 12 noon. Then, an afternoon of technical cheese processing issues are explored, along with a free lunch served, in the Members’ Pavilion at the venue. The day ends with the Society’s annual dinner the same evening. The timing of the 2024 SDT annual dinner (key sponsor, Diversey) is perfect for those attending the International Cheese and Dairy Expo on Thursday 27 June.

The next morning, it is the cheese judging for the International Cheese & Dairy Awards, with thousands of cheeses on display and hundreds of judges, and our very own Expo, held at the same time. Our industry seminars begin at 9:30 with Ecolab, and wind up at 15:30 with Savencia and the Academy of Cheese. Not to mention the dozens of exhibitors on hand, ranging from Amcor to Pedrollo Distribution and Masterpack.

It promises to be a jam-packed day, full of information, cheese and interesting exhibitors of all stripes.

For those who want some star power, Adam Hensen (from Countryfile – who does not love a farmer?) will be at the SDT Dinner, while James Martin and AJ Pritchard will be at Love Cheese Live on Friday and Saturday, 28-29 June. Plus, there will be master classes from Arla, Lactalis and Nomad, with a lot of exciting things to do, eat and see over the Love Cheese Live weekend.

Almost too much to take in, but do come along as the Expo is free to attend. Don’t miss all the excitement in Stafford!

GEA is taking a decisive step towards sustainability by implementing and expanding solar power at its sites in Bengaluru and Vadodara, India. This initiative underscores GEA’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and move towards greener production practices, closely aligned with its Climate Transition Plan 2040. The solar power installations at both sites are estimated to save nearly 900 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.

The installation of the photovoltaic panels, which use heat-safe photovoltaic technology, marks an important contribution to the use of renewable energy sources for operations. With a total installed capacity of 811 kilowatt peak (KWp), nearly 50 % of the power needs of all GEA-owned properties in India are covered by solar energy.

Johannes Giloth, chief operating officer (COO) of GEA, said, “Fostering solar power at our Bengaluru and Vadodara sites is a significant step forward in our global sustainability strategy, enhancing our operational efficiency. This initiative reinforces our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and showcases GEA’s dedication to being a leader in eco-friendly manufacturing practices.”

Commitment to safety and holistic sustainable practices

Safety has been paramount throughout the implementation of GEA’s solar power project. Solar panels with back glass and special features have been used to mitigate risks such as overheating and power surges, ensure optimal performance and protect against potential hazards such as fire incidents. Moreover, all installations at both sites comply with global safety standards, demonstrating GEA’s commitment to industry-leading safety protocols and sustainable initiatives.

In addition to solar power, GEA has implemented several other sustainable projects at its Indian sites, including the installation of LED lighting, wastewater recycling, waterless toilets, and the promotion of electric and hybrid vehicles across its supply chain. These efforts underscore GEA’s determination to advance sustainable practices.

Suvneet Jain, Country Managing Director of GEA in India, added, “By investing in photovoltaic installations at all viable locations in the Vadodara and Bengaluru units, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also setting an example for the industry in India. Harnessing solar energy reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.”

About GEA’s sites in Bengaluru and Vadodara

GEA’s Bengaluru site specializes in manufacturing equipment for the Separation and Flow Technologies division. The multi-purpose complex in Bengaluru covers an area of 38,200 square meters and includes production areas and a service and training center for the business unit Separation. Approximately 200 workers are employed in Bengaluru, and more than 50 percent of the products are exported.

GEA’s office and production site in Vadodara is staffed by a total of 700 employees and focuses on the technologies from GEA’s divisions Liquid & Powder, Food & Healthcare, and Heating & Refrigeration Technologies. Over 50 percent of the products are exported to other countries in Asia. Covering a manufacturing complex spanning over 40,700 square meters, a site improvement program since 2018 has already enhanced sustainable practices. In 2021, the first photovoltaic systems were installed to generate energy for the office areas. Today, all GEA-owned properties in India use solar energy.
