Nestlé published its Leading the Way (pdf, 8Mb) report today outlining its commitment to the highest ethical standards in the marketing of infant formula. The report illustrates how the company continues to strengthen its compliance through enhanced systems, training and monitoring activities across all distribution channels, both online and offline.

Béatrice Guillaume-Grabisch, executive vice president and Group WHO Code Ombudsperson, said: “Compliance is about values, integrity and trust, which are crucial for building a successful and long-lasting organization. Looking to the future, we remain focused on strengthening our compliance measures through collaboration with our direct partners, including those in e-commerce.”

Compliance with the Policy For Implementing the WHO Code (pdf, 5Mb) is mandatory. The report published today highlights the firm and swift actions taken when instances of non-compliance are confirmed, including disciplinary measures. Nestlé also encourages its employees and external stakeholders to share their concerns regarding its compliance anonymously on its Speak Up platform without the concern of retaliation.

This transparent reporting is integral to Nestlé’s desire to make a significant and widespread contribution to the health and well-being of infants and young children, while upholding the highest possible standards in the marketing of infant formula.

Nestlé remains steadfast in protecting, promoting, and supporting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by the introduction of appropriate complementary foods. The company takes this very seriously, and to that end, it has strengthened its Policy for Implementing the WHO Code. Nestlé’s global policy prohibits the promotion of infant formula intended for babies less than 6 months in all countries as a minimum. Furthermore, in more than 160 countries, the company applies stricter rules and does not promote formula for babies aged 0-12 months as a minimum.

The global dairy co-operative Fonterra and natural ingredient manufacturer Superbrewed Food have teamed up to boost sustainable food production.

The partnership combines Superbrewed’s biomass protein platform with Fonterra’s dairy processing, ingredients, and applications expertise to develop additional nutrient-rich, functional biomass protein. The collaboration addresses the rising global demand for protein, reflecting both companies’ commitment to delivering sustainably sourced, functional proteins that meet customer and consumer needs worldwide.

The collaboration builds upon Superbrewed’s commercial launch of its patented biomass protein, called Postbiotic Cultured Protein. Postbiotic Cultured Protein is a non-GMO, allergen-free, nutrient-dense bacteria biomass protein that recently received US market green light from the FDA. In ingredient evaluations, Fonterra determined that the function and nutrition of Postbiotic Cultured Protein complement dairy ingredients in food applications with growing consumer demand.

As Superbrewed demonstrated that its non-GMO, fermentation platform could be adapted to ferment other inputs, the multi-year joint effort seeks to develop new biomass protein solutions based on the fermentation of multi-feedstocks, including Fonterra’s lactose permeate, which is produced during dairy processing. The objective is to add value to Fonterra’s lactose by converting it into high-quality, sustainable protein with Superbrewed’s technology.

Bryan Tracy, CEO of Superbrewed Food, stated: “We are excited to be partnering with a company of Fonterra’s stature, as it recognises the value in bringing Postbiotic Cultured Protein to market, and is a pivotal step towards expanding our offerings of biomass ingredients that further contribute to sustainable food production.”

Chris Ireland, GM innovation partnerships commented: “Partnering with Superbrewed Foods is a fantastic opportunity. Their cutting-edge technology aligns with our mission to provide sustainable nutritional solutions to the world and respond to the global demand for protein solutions thereby creating more value from milk for our farmers.”

Ingredion has today introduced NOVATION® Indulge 2940, the first functional native corn starch that provides unique gelling and film-forming properties, highly suitable for dairy and alternative dairy cheese and batters and breadings.

The minimally processed, functional native starch represents the latest innovation from Ingredion’s clean label product pipeline, delivering novel texture and mouthfeel as well as natural claim enablement. NOVATION® Indulge 2940 offers a consumer-preferred “corn starch” label, which is highly recognised and more accepted by consumers globally compared to most hydrocolloids and other common food additives for texture, according to Ingredion’s ATLAS proprietary consumer insights. In EMEA, corn starch gained 20 percentage points in consumer acceptance between 2020 and 2023, a sign that the ingredient is broadening its appeal further, across categories.

“To formulate vegan pizza cheese or coated fried products and deliver on a clean label has been a challenge in the past. Not only can we now offer an innovative solution, we can also improve the stretch or crispness during holding time, respectively” said Constantin Drapatz, senior marketing manager EMEA, Clean & Simple Ingredients, Ingredion Incorporated. “With NOVATION® Indulge 2940, we meet growing clean label segments like batters and breadings and finally match the great story of more sustainable eating with a clean label.

Consumer interest on the importance of what is listed on a product label has grown rapidly in recent years, with 73% of EMEA consumers requiring products made with only recognisable ingredients, according to ATLAS. NOVATION®Indulge 2940 will help food brands achieve the flexibility required by today’s health-conscious consumer, delivering a clean label ingredient that doesn’t compromise on texture or taste.

NOVATION® Indulge 2940 can support cost stabilisation and improved cost-in-use thanks to the ingredient’s reliable supply.

Further information on the benefits and potential applications of NOVATION® Indulge 2940, as well as other Ingredion offerings, can be found on the Ingredion website.

I’m taking a pause from watching the Paris Olympics and trying not to vent my frustration at the BBC inexplicably switching from a brilliant gold medal tennis match yesterday to shooting and so forth, to give you all some exciting news.

At Dairy Industries International, we are planning for the future.

Yes, the Dairy Industries Expo will be running again in the UK next year, with a view towards bringing to the industry what has been demanded from industry professionals – a dedicated event that encompasses the entire dairy processing chain, from processor to plate.

The Dairy Industries Expo will bring together the latest in processing machinery and services, packaging machines and materials, turnkey suppliers, quality control and assurance, ingredients, and logistics, creating the most comprehensive international dairy processing show, all under one roof.

Targeting the entire dairy processing and manufacturing industry, the event will provide a platform for meeting new customers and strengthening relationships with current clients. This is the industry’s own event, set to deliver all the latest innovations and developments – from butter, yogurt and milk, to ice cream, cheese and whey, and so much more.

This means, sadly, that we will not be working with our friends at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards next year, as we’re looking to cover the entire spectrum of dairy products and services with our event. Cheese is obviously a wonderful, diverse product type, but it is just one colour of the rainbow that is dairy.

So, keep an eye out on your inbox and on the socials, as we will be announcing the dates and venues coming up. Every year we plan to get bigger and better, and 2025 is set to be a great show for the expo and the industry. Don’t miss out!

We are excited to announce the Dairy Industries Expo is set to take place in autumn 2025. This exhibition meets the longstanding demand from industry professionals for a dedicated event that encompasses the entire dairy processing chain—from processor to plate.

The Dairy Industries Expo will bring together the latest in processing machinery and services, packaging machines and materials, turnkey suppliers, quality control and assurance, ingredients, and logistics, creating the most comprehensive international dairy processing show under one roof.

Targeting the entire dairy processing and manufacturing industry, the event will provide a powerful platform for meeting new customers and strengthening relationships with current clients. This is the industry’s own event, set to deliver all the latest innovations and developments – from butter, yogurt and milk, to ice cream, cheese and whey.

Visitors will experience cutting-edge dairy innovations and equipment presented by exhibitors, and they can participate in informative workshops and seminars.

The event will feature an exciting programme of keynote presentations covering all sectors of the dairy industry, with free-to-attend sessions on the exhibition floor. Additionally, a series of engaging workshops will ensure that Dairy Industries Expo is much more than just a trade show.

Organized by the leading industry journal Dairy Industries International, alongside Bell Publishing’s experienced events team, the Dairy Industries Expo was launched in response to the industry’s call for an international event specifically targeting their needs.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to be part of the Dairy Industries Expo, where the future of dairy processing will be on full display.

More than just a trade show, this is the event that will shape the industry’s future.

Sadly, we will not be working with our friends at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards next year, as we’re looking to cover the entire spectrum of dairy products and services with our event. Symrise AG, a global supplier of fragrances, flavourings, cosmetic active ingredients and raw materials, as well as functional ingredients, strengthened its profitable growth course in the first half of 2024. Despite the persistently challenging environment worldwide, Symrise again significantly increased both sales and profitability, above all thanks to strict cost management.

Symrise increased sales by 6.3 % to € 2,565 million (H1 2023: € 2,414 million). Excluding portfolio and exchange rate effects, sales increased organically by 11.5 %, driven by the positive performance of the company’s two segments.

At the same time, profitability measured by the EBITDA margin of 20.7 % was significantly higher than the previous year’s adjusted figure of 19.7 %. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) rose to € 530 million, an increase of 11.5 % compared to the previous year’s adjusted figure.

The main drivers of profitability were slightly favourable material usage and, especially, the efficiency program initiated in the first quarter that was implemented consistently in the second quarter and has already generated around 50 % of the target savings of around € 50 million.

Jean-Yves Parisot, chief executive officer of Symrise AG: “Symrise is on course. I am committed to continuing Symrise’s success story – for the good of our customers, our shareholders and our employees. This is what we focused on in the past months. Despite our success in the first half of the year, we are not sitting back. Our good performance in recent months gives us confidence for the second half of the year. For this reason, we are therefore again confirming our growth and profitability targets for the full year.”

Symrise confirms long-term targets

Despite the current volatile market environment as a result of geopolitical tensions and continued high inflation overall, Symrise is well-positioned to continue on its profitable growth path. In this respect, the company is benefiting from its robust and sustainable business model, diversified application portfolio and broad regional presence and customer base.

In light of its good first-half performance, Symrise is therefore confirming its growth and profitability targets, and continues to expect to grow faster than the relevant market. The company is targeting sales growth of between 5 and 7 % (organic) in 2024. In terms of profitability, it is seeking to achieve an EBITDA margin of around 20 %. For the business free cash flow, the Group is aiming for a rate relative to sales of 12 % in 2024. Symrise will also maintain strict cost awareness in the context of its ongoing efficiency program.

In the long term, the company aims to increase its sales to € 7.5 to 8.0 billion by 2028. Annual growth of 5 to 7 % (CAGR) as well as targeted acquisitions are expected to contribute to this. Profitability (EBITDA margin) should remain within a target corridor of 20 to 23 %.

Taste, Nutrition & Health segment

Taste, Nutrition & Health achieved organic sales growth of 10.0 % in the first half of 2024. Taking into account portfolio and exchange rate effects, the segment’s sales in the reporting currency amounted to € 1,572 million, an increase of 2.9 % (H1 2023: € 1,527 million). The portfolio effect from the 2024 divestment of the UK beverage trading business by the Food & Beverage division had a negative impact of € 16 million on sales development.

In the Food & Beverage division, demand for savoury products particularly developed strongly to deliver double-digit organic growth. Strong growth was recorded in the EAME (Europe, Africa, Middle East) and Latin America regions especially. The Naturals business unit and the business units for sweet products and beverage flavouring achieved low single-digit percentage growth and recorded gains in the North America and Asia/Pacific regions especially.

The Pet Food division was also able to sustain its growth trend. Sales development in the Asia/Pacific and Latin America regions was particularly dynamic, with double-digit organic growth in some cases. In EAME, strong growth was posted by Spain, Turkey and Belgium in particular.

In the first half of 2024, sales development in the Aqua Feed division was characterized by declining organic growth. In the course of further portfolio optimization with focus on high-margin growth areas, Symrise intends to divest the business until the end of the year.

The probiotics business, which includes the majority interest in the listed company Probi AB, Lund, Sweden, generated single-digit percentage growth, driven especially by higher demand in the EAME region.

The segment’s EBITDA amounted to € 348 million (H1 2023: € 335 million), an increase of 3.8 %. The increase was mainly attributable to profitable sales growth and a slight decline in the raw material cost ratio. The EBITDA margin was 22.1 %, which was higher than the previous year’s figure of 21.9 %.

Scent & Care segment

Scent & Care achieved organic sales growth of 14.1 %. Taking into account exchange rate effects, sales increased to € 993 million in the reporting currency, 12.1 % higher than the same period of the previous year (H1 2023: € 886 million).

The Fragrance division achieved very strong organic growth. The Fine Fragrances business unit in particular continued its dynamic development and followed its strong performance from previous year with renewed double-digit percentage organic growth. The growth rates in the Asia/Pacific and Latin America regions were particularly pronounced. The Consumer Fragrances business unit also posted double-digit percentage growth. Here, the biggest gains were posted by the Asia/Pacific and EAME regions. With high single-digit organic growth, the Oral Care business unit also showed gratifying development.

Sales development in the Aroma Molecules division recovered significantly in the first half of 2024. Although the market environment remained difficult, the resumption of production at Colonels Island, USA, resulted in a very positive increase in sales compared to the previous year. High double-digit growth rates were achieved in the EAME and Asia/Pacific regions.

Sales by the Cosmetic Ingredients division continued to develop very well in the first six months of the current year, again posting double-digit percentage organic growth. The EAME, Asia/Pacific and Latin America regions again increased sales significantly. Only the North America region saw just slight growth compared to the previous year. The strongest growth was posted by the sun protection business and the Micro Protection business unit.

The segment generated EBITDA of € 182 million, a significant increase of € 42 million compared to the previous year’s adjusted figure of € 140 million. The segment’s EBITDA margin was 18.3 %, 2.5 percentage points higher than the previous year’s adjusted figure of 15.8 %.

Consolidated net income and earnings per share

The consolidated net income attributable to the shareholders of Symrise AG for the first six months of 2024 amounted to € 239 million, which was € 52 million, or 27.7 %, higher than the previous year’s figure of € 188 million. This was mainly due to the improved profitability and the one-time effects of € 29.0 million posted the previous year in the Scent & Care segment. Earnings per share rose to € 1.71 in the first half of 2024, up from € 1.34 in the same period of the previous year.

Cash flow

At € 288 million, cash flow from operating activities for the first half of 2024 was € 144 million higher than in the previous year (€ 144 million), mainly due to an improvement in earnings in the normal course of operations and lower working capital.

Business free cash flow more than doubled in the first six months and amounted to € 226 million, up € 120 million from € 106 million in the same period of the previous year. As a percentage of sales, business free cash flow was 8.8 % (H1 2023: 4.4 %).

Swiss giant Nestlé reported that its Infant Nutrition sales grew at a low single-digit rate, based on continued momentum for NAN, Lactogen and human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) products for the first half of 2024, while growth in Nestlé Health Science turned positive, with sales improvements across most segments in the second quarter. The integration plan is fully on track. However, Dairy posted close to flat growth, as dairy culinary solutions delivered robust growth, offsetting a sales decline in coffee creamers and ambient dairy. In culinary, Maggi delivered robust growth, which was offset by frozen food in North America.

Overall, organic growth of 2.1%, with positive real internal growth (RIG) of 0.1% for the first half and 2.2% for the second quarter improving in all zones and categories, was seen. Total reported sales dipped by 2.7% to CHF45 billion, with an impact from foreign exchange of -4.4% and net divestitures of -0.4%.

The full-year outlook has been updated, with the company expecting at least 3% organic sales growth. The underlying trading operating profit margin guidance remains unchanged with a moderate increase expected.

Mark Schneider, Nestlé CEO, comments, “We delivered improved volume and mix growth across the group in the second quarter. Nestlé Health Science is recovering as planned and is set for a strong second half. Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, we will continue to drive RIG by launching innovations that address consumer trends and growing our large iconic brands. At the same time, we have seen pricing come down faster than expected. Therefore, we consider it prudent to adjust our guidance for the year, with organic sales growth now expected to be at least 3%.”

Net divestitures impacted sales by -0.4%, largely related to the creation of a joint venture with PAI Partners for Nestlé’s frozen pizza business in Europe. The impact on sales from foreign exchange was negative at -4.4%. Total reported sales decreased by -2.7% to CHF 45.0 billion.

In North America, growth for the beverages category, including Starbucks at-home products, Coffee mate and Nescafé, was close to flat, as continued growth momentum for Starbucks and Nescafé was offset by Coffee mate. In the second quarter, sales of Coffee mate turned slightly positive. Infant Nutrition saw a sales decrease, with robust growth for Nido growing up milks more than offset by a category slowdown, which impacted Gerber baby food. Growth in frozen food was negative as the category remains under pressure, reflecting soft consumer demand and continued price competition. The business delivered improved trends in the second quarter for all segments through sharpened price points and affordable innovations such as DiGiorno Classic Crust.

In the Asian sector, the key growth drivers were Central and West Africa, South Asia and Thailand. The zone achieved market share gains in confectionery and coffee ready-to-drink, with losses in dairy. Coffee delivered mid single-digit growth, driven by Nescafé and supported by new product launches including the new espresso concentrate for cold coffee. Sales for Nestlé Professional grew at a high single-digit rate across most geographies and categories, underpinned by customer acquisition. Dairy posted positive growth, supported by affordable milks and dairy culinary solutions.

For South America, sales in dairy grew at a low single-digit rate, with strong growth for La Lechera and Carnation. Infant Nutrition posted positive growth, with robust demand for infant cereals.

Arla Foods Ingredients has secured the US Food & Drug Administration approval for the use of whey protein hydrolysates that support allergy management and gut comfort in infant formula, the company says.

The FDA agreed that four ingredients in the company’s Peptigen and Lacprodan ranges meet the definition of peptones in the US Code of Federal Regulations. As such, they are permitted for use in early life nutrition.

Anders Steen Jørgensen, head of Arla Foods Ingredients’ paediatric business unit, says, “We have over 30 years’ experience of developing and producing safe, high-quality whey protein hydrolysates for the infant formula market at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. Our strategy is to ensure these scientifically backed ingredients are available all over the world. We are delighted that US infant formula manufacturers can now use four of our hydrolysates in infant nutrition products targeting cow’s milk allergy management or reduction of gut discomfort.”

It is estimated that 2-3% of infants in the US now suffer from cow’s milk allergy.[1] In most cases where breastfeeding is not possible, hydrolysed formulas backed by clinical proof of efficacy are recommended for them.

The four ingredients now permitted by the FDA for use in early life nutrition products are:

  • Peptigen IF-3032, an extensively hydrolysed whey protein recommended for use in allergy management nutrition solutions. Multiple clinical studies support its suitability for infants with cow’s milk allergies.[2]
  • Peptigen IF-3080, which is also suitable for allergy management nutrition solutions, and secured safety and suitability approval from EFSA for use in infant formula and follow-on milk in the EU in 2023.
  • Peptigen IF-3085, a partially hydrolysed protein, which can be suitable in products for infants at high risk of developing milk allergies.
  • Lacprodan IF-3070, which is designed to support the reduction of gastrointestinal discomfort.

Steen Jørgensen adds, “We invest heavily in preclinical and clinical trials to provide scientific evidence for our ingredients’ benefits. Our whey protein hydrolysates have been shown to support the safe growth of formula-fed infants who are unable to tolerate traditional milk-based formulas.”

Arla Foods Ingredients has received approval for Lacprodan IF-3070 and Lacprodan DI-3072 for the Chinese formula market, and additional hydrolysate products are going through the country’s approval process.

Lactalis Ingredients unveils its Corporate Social Responsibility report for 2023. This document illustrates the progress the company has made in sustainable development, demonstrating its efforts in vital areas such as the environment, nutrition and the health and well-being of employees.

This year’s report highlights the initiatives and improvements introduced in 2023 to reinforce responsible practices.

Key advances and outlook for the future in Lactalis Ingredients CSR action plan

With regard to environmental protection: Lactalis Ingredients achieved its goal of 100 % of European
sites being ISO 14001 certified a year ahead of schedule, and continues to contribute to the Group’s
greenhouse gas reduction targets for scopes 1&2:

  • – 25 % by 2025
  • – 50 % by 2033.

The division reduced its greenhouse gas emissions for scopes 1 & 2 by 10.6 % compared with 2022,
and by 17.3 % compared with the baseline of 2019. New projects are planned to further reduce our
emissions:

  • At the Parme and Bozzolo sites in Italy, solar electricity production projects are in progress.
At Bozzolo, the installation of 5 300 m2 of solar panels will produce 700 MWh per year,
accounting for 5 % of the site’s consumption.
  • At the Mayenne site in France, a biomass steam production unit is to be built. Due to be
operational in January 2025, this boiler will cover 83 % of the energy needs of the site, thus
reducing fossil fuel CO2 emissions by nearly 25 000 tons.

With regard to food safety: 93 % of the company’s factories are FSSC 22000 certified. This figure will rise to 100 % as we move nearer to 2025. In 2023, in the interests of promoting better nutrition for all, Lactalis Ingredients launched a full blown analysis of all its products to test their nutritional energy
values. This is to meet the demand for transparency of the end consumer by providing clearer information to our direct customers.

With regard to our responsibility towards our employees: aware of a margin for improvement in
terms of safety, Lactalis Ingredients had set itself a target of halving the work accident frequency rate
by 2024. This target was attained in 2023. Lactalis Ingredients is therefore setting a new target of
halving the work accidents frequency rate again by 2026.

The Lactalis Ingredients CSR action plan is an integral part of the Group CSR strategy. And the Group CSR strategy is an integral part of the strategy for profitable and responsible company growth. On the occasion of the Group’s 90th anniversary, Lactalis revealed its current purpose in action: “Nurture the future”. By adopting this purpose in action, Lactalis clarifies the role it wants to play in the world. The company has chosen to nurture a responsible future by pledging to provide the best dairy products possible to support each and everyone’s growth, in partnership with local territories.

For Lactalis, the specific characteristics of dairy products make them part of the solution for sustainable nutrition. Lactalis is thus working to reduce its impact on the environment and the climate across its value chain. The development of women and men and the communities and territories where the
Group operates is also essential to the long-term viability of the business. As global leader and an expert in the field, Lactalis has a clear responsibility to nurture the future.

In 2022, the Group signed a letter of commitment in order to align its gas emissions reduction trajectory with the recommendations of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The Group has set objectives for scopes 1&2. These interim targets will enable Lactalis to progress towards the ultimate goal of zero net emissions. As a company operating in the dairy sector the Group is aware that, beyond the emissions related to its own activities (scopes 1 and 2), it equally needs to take action on the emissions induced by its activities, both upstream and downstream of its value chain. That is why in 2023 Lactalis set about defining intermediate commitments for scope 3. Lactalis now plans to submit all its targets (scopes 1, 2 and 3) to the SBTi for review and validation in 2024.

The post Tetra Pak launches solution to eliminate foam from liquid protein mixing appeared first on Dairy Industries International.

]]>
Tetra Pak has announced the launch of the Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer, a groundbreaking new product designed to reduce product loss in liquid protein mixing. A direct response to the longstanding issue of foaming during the mixing phase of liquid food products, this innovative solution is set to improve food and beverage (F&B) manufacturers’ operational efficiency.

Traditional methods of mixing in liquid food production often encounter problems with air entrapment and foaming, resulting in lost product. Foaming alone is estimated to cost approximately €276,400 annually in typical food and beverage production scenarios,[1] making this mixer an important technological evolution for F&B manufacturers aiming to reduce their total cost of ownership, boost margins and improve product quality.

The Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer introduces a pioneering approach to mixing protein powders, which are a high value raw material. The new mixer combats foaming through a sophisticated design and multi-step process that includes reducing air ingress and employing advanced automation to optimise the mixing procedure. The result is a mixing process that is foam-free, which both minimises product loss and streamlines downstream processes, resulting in less downtime due to cleaning and equipment maintenance. Foaming also causes oxidation, which decreases shelf life and is often combatted by the addition of de-foaming agents like silicon oil. These additives are not needed with the Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer, leading to a product with fewer additives, reduced nutrient oxidation, and longer shelf life.

With 70% of consumers confirming that health has become more important for them over the last few years[2] , and the global market for active nutrition products expected to reach €80 billion by 2030,[3] protein-enriched food products, including powders, represent a growing market. The Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer is poised to help F&B manufacturers make the most of this lucrative product category, catering to both current demands and emerging opportunities.

From whey powders to plant-based and fermentation-derived proteins, the mixer can be deployed across a broad spectrum of industrial applications. Furthermore, its capacity to manage production ranging from small trial batches to large-scale outputs of up to 50,000 litres per hour ensures both adaptability and efficiency.

Fiona Liebehenz, vice president key components, plant solutions and channel management at Tetra Pak, comments: “This progressive new Tetra Pak Industrial Product Mixer was the result of a customer approaching us with serious foaming issues at their factory, disrupting production and compromising product quality. After promising initial tests in mitigating this issue, our highly skilled team in Denmark continued to refine our approach through meticulous and lengthy testing. The end result is a mixer with multiple relevant new features and a five-step process that together eliminates the root causes of foaming, reduces product loss, and solves the customer’s challenge. It has exceeded expectations by far, leading to an immediate order from the customer.”

She continues: “This is just one example of our commitment to taking care of the immediate needs of our customers, not only solving the problem at hand but creating a solution to improve future productivity and profitability. By working in this way, we support manufacturers to capitalise on a multitude of opportunities for continued growth based on exceeding expectations of their own consumers and tapping into new markets.”

Yes, it’s nearly here. In two weeks’ time we’ll be packing up down south and heading to Staffordshire County Showground, for the International Cheese & Dairy Expo. It promises to be an information-filled few days, ranging from the Society of Dairy Technology’s Summer Symposium and Annual Dinner on 26 June, to the International Cheese & Dairy Awards, to the Expo’s exhibitors and full day of seminars on 27 June.

It will be a few days not to miss out, if you want the latest about the industry. Who’s doing what, and what new equipment and products are available for the dairy processor. Cheese will be on offer, with thousands of entries and hundreds of judges.

There will be so many exhibitors to visit, so definitely wear your comfortable walking shoes for this, ranging from AB Dairy to Beijing Kwinbon Technology, and cheese makers including Belton Farms and Shepherds Purse. I was looking at Facchinetti equipment this week while I was in Italy, and thinking, I can spend more time examining it in Stafford in a few weeks’ time.

Personnel, automation, IT, enzymes, cheese making and every aspect of the dairy processing industry is on show here at the Expo. It is going to be a busy full day, I guarantee. That hall is packed full of amazing companies offering so much information (and cheese), it will be quite the event. Don’t miss it!

Grab your ticket and let’s see you at the Expo!

For more information on the event, please contact Samantha Bull, Sam@bellpublishing.com.

Müller has reached an agreement to acquire Yew Tree Dairy.

Yew Tree Dairy, which is based in in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire, is a family-owned dairy company producing fresh milk and cream. Following significant investment in recent years, the business now also specialises in milk powder production.

With the acquisition, Müller will use Yew Tree Dairy’s production capabilities for milk powder to grow its export business, drive supply chain resilience and secure a positive future for the British dairy industry.

Completion of the deal is expected later this year subject to approval from the Competition and Markets Authority. Once the deal is completed, Müller plans to significantly invest in the capacity and capabilities of the Skelmersdale milk drying site. Tapping into internal expertise and experience from across the Müller group, the business will enhance its milk drying capability, enabling it to become a major producer and exporter of powdered milk products made in Britain, with milk from British dairy farms.

The acquisition will benefit customers, consumers, suppliers and employees of both businesses, while offering supplying farmers enhanced opportunities and long-term security.

Rob Hutchison, CEO at Müller Milk & Ingredients said:

“This significant investment in the British dairy industry underlines our ambition to grow Müller and build a better future for the sector.

“Yew Tree Dairy has excellent processing capabilities, a talented team with great expertise, and strong relationships with its customers and supplying farms. When combined with our well-invested and resilient network, I am very confident that these two family-owned businesses will complement each other really well.

“Britain is a great place for dairy farming and has an excellent reputation for quality, welfare standards and sustainability. This acquisition will enable us to tap into global dairy consumption growth, unlock additional export opportunities and continue to drive supply chain resilience.”

Carl Woodcock from Yew Tree Dairy said:

“We as a family are very proud of the dairy business we have built and are looking forward to seeing the progression and development by Müller of the Skelmersdale operation. The family felt the time was right to explore new opportunities whilst retaining our farming roots.

“We would like to thank all who have been involved in the Yew Tree Dairy business over the years. Our success is in no small part due to our dedicated staff, farmers and customers that have been part of our journey.

“We have known Rob and the team from Müller for many years. After meeting with the Müller family, we feel confident that this is the right decision for the business to be part of a larger organisation for the next phase of growth that will benefit our staff, farmers, and customers in the longer term.

“The key for us was to find a buyer that not only shared our values but had an exciting vision for the future of the great British dairy industry. Following a competitive process, Müller was our clear preference, and we leave our business in really good hands.”
