Delamere Dairy has launched the world’s first on-farm carbon benchmarking scheme developed specifically for the dairy goat industry.

The scheme has been developed in partnership with Alltech E-CO2 and its Carbon Trust certified model to form part of Delamere Dairy’s commitment to reduce emission and work towards the NFU’s target of net zero emissions by 2040.

PAS 2050 is the first consensus-based and internationally applicable standard on product carbon footprinting that has been used as the basis for the development of other standards internationally. The Delamere Dairy benchmarking scheme utilises a system that has been certified to both PAS 2050 and ISO 14067 standards

The NFU has set the ambitious goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the whole of agriculture in England and Wales by 2040, which will form the contribution to the UK’s ambition of net zero by 2050.

Agriculture is uniquely placed to be part of the solution, as figures show that emissions from UK farms presently amount to 45.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) a year – about one tenth of UK GHG emissions.

The dairy goat carbon benchmarking scheme will equip farmers with a unique action plan to ensure that they are getting the best performance and productivity out of livestock, while working towards carbon neutral farming.

Ed Salt, managing director, Delamere Dairy said: “As the worldwide goat dairy industry continues to grow it is important that as company, we can demonstrate our commitment to reduce carbon emissions in line with other sectors of UK agriculture.

“I am delighted to announce, in partnership with Alltech E-CO2 the development and roll out of our CObenchmarking scheme, a scheme developed specifically for the commercial goat dairy industry and a world first.”

Ben Braou, business general manager, Alltech E- CO2 said: “From our extensive experience we have been able to show the direct correlation between business efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Through our partnership with Delamere Dairy, Alltech E-CO2 is pleased to help drive the development of a more sustainable commercial goat dairy industry. We believe that Delamere Dairy is leading the industry in taking an important step to reduce the emissions of goat dairy farming.”

Delamere Dairy is fast becoming a pioneer within the dairy goat industry by delivering initiatives to encourage sustainability. Its investment into both Cabrito Goat Meat and Billy Tannery mean that goat kid meat is now sold into the food industry and the goat hides are used to create luxury leather goods creating its own circular economy.

Delamere Dairy scooped thirteen awards including five trophies at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards including Supreme Champion Dairy Product for its plain goats’ yogurt.

Taking place on 21 October and beating off competition from over 4000 entries, as well as recognition for its goats’ yogurt Delamere picked up gold prizes for its goats’ milk, cheddar style cheese and its newly reformulated spreadable goats’ cheese.

New for 2021, was the George B Lawrence MBE Trophy for the ICDA Supreme Champion Dairy Product and Delamere was delighted to win the accolade in its first year.

Ed Salt, MD at Delamere Dairy commented, “It goes without saying that we were thrilled to receive the Supreme Champion Dairy for our Goats’ Yogurt. The fact that our goats’ yogurt came out on top against more mainstream dairy entries is a testament to the quality and flavour that goats’ products can deliver. It was a great day for goats with the Supreme Champion cheese also being goat.”

Delamere Dairy’s plain goats’ yogurt won the Clawson Salver for the Best Yogurt in Show as well as the Supreme Champion Dairy Product. Keeping it company were the strawberry and honey flavoured goats’ yogurts which won silver and bronze awards respectively.

Newly reformulated in October 2021 and launched for the awards, Delamere’s spreadable goats’ cheese collected The Orchard Valley Dairy Supplies Trophy for the Best Soft Cheese in Show and The Cheese Company Trophy for the Champion Modern British/ Irish cheese. The cheese is fresh and creamy with a natural acidity and soft, spreadable texture. Judges commented on its excellent aroma, clean, fresh flavour and superb texture. Made at a family dairy in Wiltshire, the cheese is delicious straight from the pot on crackers, and is also extremely versatile for use in baking and cooking.

Finally, the key to success of all Delamere products, its whole goats’ milk collected a gold award and the ICDA award for Champion Milk in Show, beating competition from fresh and long life, raw and pasteurised, plain and flavoured milk from cows, sheep and goats. Delamere Dairy, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of speciality, award-winning fresh and long-life dairy and dairy alternative products, has set up the Delamere Dairy Foundation with a commitment to donate £1 million over the next five years.

The independent charity, a corporate foundation, has received an initial deposit from the Delamere Dairy business of £250,000 to create the initial pot, from which, charitable groups and organisations will be able to apply for grants ranging from £250 to £5000.

Projects that will be considered in the first phase include the advancement of agriculture and of environmental protection, the advancement in life of young people by developing their capabilities so that they may mature as contributory members of society, the relief of financial hardship, helping people to advance their education and the relief of sickness.

Ed Salt, managing director, Delamere Dairy and a Trustee of the Foundation comments: “Our business was born out of a desire to farm and today we continue to support our contracted farms through collaborative partnerships. As custodians of Delamere Dairy, our business activity should be geared towards stewarding the company for the future, with all stakeholders, including agriculture and the natural environment, benefiting.”

“The Foundation will be a great vehicle for helping others mobilise their efforts for those in need and to realise a number of worthwhile projects. Our overwhelming belief to do the right thing is founded in strong values and principals. The Delamere Dairy Foundation will sit at the heart of our business and be a catalyst for change.”

Grants will be awarded to a wide range of causes in England, Scotland and Wales and applications will be welcomed from charities and organisations whose purpose fits with the objects of the Foundation.

Christine Buckley, appointed to run the Foundation, said: “I am delighted to be supporting Ed and the Trustees to bring to their vision to fruition. Life can be a lottery and not everybody is given the same chances. I’m looking forward to facilitating the process, learning about the organisations and individuals that will thrive with its support and in turn, create an enduring legacy for the Delamere Dairy Foundation.”

The first grant panel will meet in the autumn for the first round of funding awards from applications received over the summer.

Groups wishing to apply for grants should visit www.delameredairyfoundation.org.uk to download an application pack. The deadline for the first wave of applications is midnight on 31 July 2021. The first wave of grants will be awarded by the end of 2021.

UK Delamere Dairy has launched its first website specifically dedicated to its Flavoured Cows’ Milk range. The range has reportedly enjoyed strong growth over the last couple of years with sales up 66% in 2019 compared with 2018, and the range now sits in the top four flavoured milk brands the UK in the convenience sector.

The site has been launched with a competition for visitors to win a year’s supply of Delamere Flavoured milk by signing up to the monthly newsletter which is also being promoted across social channels.

The products quickly gained a large social media following with high levels of engagement across its channels which feature Delamere’s cow mascot Mabel and her antics.

Visitors to the site will also find product news, recipes using the milk and postcards from Mabel’s regular travels.

The five 500ml flavours (RRP £1) include Banana, Strawberry, Vanilla and Chocolate and Iced Coffee, and are widely sold across multiple and independent retailers across the UK.

Steve O’Connor, national account manager for Delamere Dairy said: “We know that the range has really enthusiastic and engaged customers, which has been evident across the social activity. They love getting involved and we have sent out thousands of Mabel cows since we launched them.

“It seems only right that the range has a standalone website so consumers can keep up to date with news and join in the fun on another platform.”

The post Delamere Dairy celebrates 35 years by releasing new milk cartons promoting sustainability appeared first on Dairy Industries International.

]]>
UK business Delamere Dairy is celebrating its 35th year of producing fresh and long-life cows’ and goats’ milk, butter, cheeses and yogurts this year with new cartons that promote one of its partner businesses, Cabrito Goat Meat, and its legacy of sustainability.

Delamere has recently acquired financial stakes in both Cabrito Goat Meat, an ethical goat meat supplier, and Billy Tannery, which produces handcrafted leather goods from goat hides, to work towards reducing unnecessary wastage in the dairy industry.

Delamere will feature the details of its partnership with Cabrito on all of its goats’ milk cartons from May this year in a move to highlight to consumers the ethical reasons to choose its milk.

Details of the partnership appear on the new 1L packaging sold in Asda, Co-op, Nisa, Ocado and independent health food stores, with an RRP of £1.60-£1.80.

Cabrito was founded in 2012 by British chef James Whetlor who used his contacts in the industry to source goat meat from British dairy farms to supply to a handful of London restaurants. The company now supplies restaurants, butchers and catering suppliers nationwide.

Delamere Dairy’s managing director, Ed Salt, said: “We are working really hard to reduce wastage in the goat farming industry and our relationship with Cabrito and also Billy Tannery, a micro tannery using waster goat hides, now completes the circle from farm to milk to meat to leather.

“We do everything we can, morally and ethically, to the best of our ability and are proud to be featuring this news on our cartons to promote how delicious goats’ meat is as the demand in the UK continues to grow.”

James Whetlor from Cabrito Goat Meat commented: “Despite the clear link between milk and meat, the topic is often uncomfortable, rarely discussed and consumers sometimes forget the relationship between milk, meat and leather. This partnership with Delamere and with our partners, Jack and Rory at Billy Tannery, is an important step in closing the circle and ending the waste in this part of the food system.”

The Delamere business has come a long way since 1985 when founders Liz & Roger Sutton purchased three goats to follow Roger’s dream of owning a livestock business. Fast forward to 2020 and the business, still based in Cheshire, now supplies speciality and alternative dairy products to over 20 countries around the world.
