Tetra Pak and Mengniu Group have launched a limited edition Milk Deluxe Pure Milk range, customised with 30 different designs of masterpieces from Van Gogh and Monet. Packaged in Tetra Prisma Aseptic 250 Edge cartons with DreamCap 26 closure, the special edition range has been brought to market through a collaboration with Meet You Museum. The cartons are now accessible to consumers across Greater China, both online and in stores.

These “handheld” works of art offer consumers an immersive experience, all while enjoying a nutritious milk drink, the companies say.

Tetra Pak Custom Printing is the first digital inkjet-based printing method in the carton packaging industry that is unrestricted by physical printing plates. It allows for over 30 designs on a single packaging material reel, and can produce limited ranges or commemorative editions of their products in an agile way. The solution also gives F&B players the ability to quickly activate marketing efforts and capitalise on consumer trends.

Xiaoyan He, senior brand manager of Milk Deluxe, comments, “Our collaboration with Meet You Museum, exploiting the potential of this solution, is helping Chinese consumers to enjoy timeless pieces of art from Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet on a daily basis.”

The post Tetra Pak launches solution to eliminate foam from liquid protein mixing appeared first on Dairy Industries International.

]]>
Tetra Pak has announced the launch of the Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer, a groundbreaking new product designed to reduce product loss in liquid protein mixing. A direct response to the longstanding issue of foaming during the mixing phase of liquid food products, this innovative solution is set to improve food and beverage (F&B) manufacturers’ operational efficiency.

Traditional methods of mixing in liquid food production often encounter problems with air entrapment and foaming, resulting in lost product. Foaming alone is estimated to cost approximately €276,400 annually in typical food and beverage production scenarios,[1] making this mixer an important technological evolution for F&B manufacturers aiming to reduce their total cost of ownership, boost margins and improve product quality.

The Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer introduces a pioneering approach to mixing protein powders, which are a high value raw material. The new mixer combats foaming through a sophisticated design and multi-step process that includes reducing air ingress and employing advanced automation to optimise the mixing procedure. The result is a mixing process that is foam-free, which both minimises product loss and streamlines downstream processes, resulting in less downtime due to cleaning and equipment maintenance. Foaming also causes oxidation, which decreases shelf life and is often combatted by the addition of de-foaming agents like silicon oil. These additives are not needed with the Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer, leading to a product with fewer additives, reduced nutrient oxidation, and longer shelf life.

With 70% of consumers confirming that health has become more important for them over the last few years[2] , and the global market for active nutrition products expected to reach €80 billion by 2030,[3] protein-enriched food products, including powders, represent a growing market. The Tetra Pak Industrial Protein Mixer is poised to help F&B manufacturers make the most of this lucrative product category, catering to both current demands and emerging opportunities.

From whey powders to plant-based and fermentation-derived proteins, the mixer can be deployed across a broad spectrum of industrial applications. Furthermore, its capacity to manage production ranging from small trial batches to large-scale outputs of up to 50,000 litres per hour ensures both adaptability and efficiency.

Fiona Liebehenz, vice president key components, plant solutions and channel management at Tetra Pak, comments: “This progressive new Tetra Pak Industrial Product Mixer was the result of a customer approaching us with serious foaming issues at their factory, disrupting production and compromising product quality. After promising initial tests in mitigating this issue, our highly skilled team in Denmark continued to refine our approach through meticulous and lengthy testing. The end result is a mixer with multiple relevant new features and a five-step process that together eliminates the root causes of foaming, reduces product loss, and solves the customer’s challenge. It has exceeded expectations by far, leading to an immediate order from the customer.”

She continues: “This is just one example of our commitment to taking care of the immediate needs of our customers, not only solving the problem at hand but creating a solution to improve future productivity and profitability. By working in this way, we support manufacturers to capitalise on a multitude of opportunities for continued growth based on exceeding expectations of their own consumers and tapping into new markets.”

]]>
Tetra Pak has unveiled its ‘Factory Sustainable Solutions’ offering, a new factory-wide approach to energy, water and cleaning-in-place (CIP) optimisation.

A new offer within Tetra Pak’s broader sustainability portfolio, the ‘Factory Sustainable Solutions’ business offers Food and Beverage (F&B) producers a tailored blend of state-of-the-art technologies and leading plant integration capabilities. It seeks to support F&B producers in optimising energy and resource consumption, an important step in helping customers meet their sustainability ambitions and reduce operational costs.

Traditionally reliant on fossil fuels and energy-intensive processes,[1] F&B producers are under increasing pressure to optimise resources and increase energy generation from renewable sources. This comes amidst rising operational expenses, including the cost of raw materials, as well as new CO2 taxes and fees for wasted water. Finding solutions to these challenges will be key, with businesses looking to their supply chains and manufacturing processes to help achieve cost savings[2].

Complementing its resource-efficient equipment and services portfolio, Tetra Pak’s ‘Factory Sustainable Solutions’ embodies a systematic, factory-wide approach. Solutions can be integrated at any stage to recover and reduce the consumption of resources, such as energy, water and chemicals. Optimised resource consumption reduces long-term operational costs[3] and related greenhouse gas emissions[4], whilst supporting compliance against ever-tightening sustainability standards.

The Tetra Pak Factory Sustainable Solutions team will support customers by finding the right technologies and integration solutions for their needs, advising them on the best practice set-up for their line or facility. This results in a tailored pipes and installation diagram that optimises water, energy and CIP according to the specific needs of the customer’s operations.

The ‘Factory Sustainable Solutions’ offering boosts state-of-the-art technologies, such as:

 • Nanofiltration, which reclaims caustic cleaning liquid used for CIP. This solution developed by Tetra Pak allows for the recovery of clean detergent chemicals and water for future re-use, enabling up to 90% recovery of the total spent CIP liquid[5].
 • Reverse Osmosis, uses proprietary membrane filtration technology developed by Tetra Pak to improve resource efficiency across multiple applications, including milk separation and water re-use.

Tetra Pak is also collaborating with innovative technology partners to offer additional solutions, including:

 • HighLift heat pump technology, in collaboration with Olvondo Technology A/S, which can be integrated into operations to facilitate the reuse of waste heat to produce steam across plant equipment, including the Tetra Pak Direct UHT unit, at pressures up to 10 bar.
 • High temperature heat pumps, in collaboration with Johnson Controls, which up-cycles process waste heat to use elsewhere in the factory.
 • Solar thermal collectors, in collaboration with Absolicon, which utilise the sun as an unlimited source of clean and renewable energy, to power the delivery of hot water and steam – at temperatures above 150°C – making it suitable for UHT applications.

Stefano Vittor, CEO at Olvondo Technology A/S, says “By incorporating our HighLift heat pump technology into its Factory Sustainable Solutions business, Tetra Pak is offering an impactful solution to reduce carbon emissions across the food and beverage industry. We’re delighted to be part of this collaboration and to play a role in the change that Tetra Pak is driving.”

Fredrik Norrbom, director, Sweden at Johnson Controls System and Service AB added: “Approximately two-thirds of industrial energy use is driven by heat demand, derived largely from fossil fuels[6]. Heat pumps are vital for increasing energy efficiency and delivering net zero heating when combined with renewable electricity. We are proud to collaborate with Tetra Pak on smart building solutions that can help customers achieve sustainability targets while also helping industry make critical progress on emissions reduction.”

Nicole Uvenbeck, director Factory Sustainable Solutions and OEM Components at Tetra Pak says: “This launch is an incredibly exciting and significant milestone for us at Tetra Pak – especially our team who have been working hard to push the boundaries of the impact and value such an approach can bring for our customers.

To date, we have mainly focused on machine and line optimisation, and we came to realise the overwhelming benefit of replicating this at a factory level, providing a more holistic approach to optimisation. Factory Sustainable Solutions is an evolution of our expertise, spanning water, energy and CIP recovery. All of this combined will redefine how we support our customers in achieving their sustainability ambitions, while reducing their operational costs.”

Fiona Liebehenz, vice president Key Components, Plant Solutions and Channel Management at Tetra Pak says: “I’m extremely proud of the team. We know that our customers are under pressure more than ever to operate as efficiently as possible when it comes to resource usage. This is, for many, an existential challenge to secure the future of their operations. Through working with them and understanding their individual needs and objectives, we’re providing them fit-for-purpose equipment enriched with our holistic food & beverages application knowledge to address that challenge, delivering tangible improvements in a way that is financially advantageous.”

The business launches today, with Tetra Pak’s Factory Sustainable Solutions expertise and advisory available globally. Tetra Pak’s goal is to continue to develop and expand the offering across all markets, in response to the ever-evolving needs of customers.

]]>
Ahead of the United Nation’s International Day of Biodiversity on 22 May, Tetra Pak has announced the launch of its ‘Approach to Nature’ – a comprehensive framework that defines the company’s contribution to halting and reversing nature loss and enhancing water security. The approach aligns with global targets, including those outlined in the Biodiversity Plan that calls for action to halt biodiversity loss and put nature on a path to recovery for the benefit of all life on earth.[1]

A report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) shows that nature is deteriorating at rates unprecedented in human history, largely due to human activity.[2] Global food systems are identified as the main drivers of nature loss,[3] with wide-reaching impacts that threaten global economies, livelihoods and food security.[4]

Recognising this complex interdependency and building on a thorough evaluation of nature-related impacts and dependencies, Tetra Pak’s ambitious new ‘Approach to Nature’ aims to manage the impacts of the company’s value chain on nature and to support the restoration of ecosystems.[5] Additionally, it seeks to contribute to global water resilience by reducing negative impacts on local water resources and addressing shared water challenges in basins at risk.[6] All of this across the geographies, the business, its suppliers, and its customers are operating in, building a strong foundation upon which Tetra Pak can further accelerate its actions for nature.

Amongst the 25 targets set by Tetra Pak:

 • By 2025, 100% of Tetra Pak’s raw materials with the most significant land footprint[7] will originate from certified or controlled sources.
 • By 2025, 100% of Tetra Pak high-water-impact suppliers[8] will report on water use and quality.
 • Eradicate waste-to-landfill from Tetra Pak production sites by 2030.
 • Achieve a 50% reduction of water use in best practice processing lines by 2030 compared to 2019.

Gilles Tisserand, vice president Climate & Biodiversity, Tetra Pak, comments: “With over half of the world’s GDP heavily reliant on nature,[9] the stakes could not be higher. Our ‘Approach to Nature’ not only reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship but also builds on our longstanding action in this domain, cemented by our inclusion in the 2023 CDP Forests A List for the eighth consecutive year and the achievement of an A- in Water Security for our first year of reporting. As other companies join us on this journey, together we can help protect and restore nature for the generations to come.”

In 2022, Tetra Pak was also a signatory of the Business for Nature coalition’s COP15 business statement, urging governments to adopt the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s Target 15. Target 15 required large private companies and financial institutions to assess and disclose their risks, dependencies, and impacts on biodiversity, provide information to consumers to promote sustainable consumption and report on compliance.[10]

Eva Zabey, CEO, Business for Nature, comments: “Tetra Pak’s ‘Approach to Nature’ marks an important milestone, emphasising how the corporate world must step up to support the ambitious targets of the Biodiversity Plan (formerly known as the Global Biodiversity Framework). We encourage all companies to set a nature strategy – a clear plan for how they will contribute towards a nature-positive future by 2030. However, businesses can’t achieve this alone; governments must create the right incentives to speed up corporate action to address nature loss.”

Tetra Pak has announced the expansion of its homogeniser portfolio, offering machines with Outokumpu Circle Green®[1] stainless steel, a material that boasts a carbon footprint up to 93% lower when compared to the global industry average for stainless steel[2]. This innovative material will be available as an option for all models in Tetra Pak’s homogeniser line in Europe from June, before rolling out globally later in the year.

With approximately 7% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions stemming from the global steel industry[3], innovating with new forms of stainless steel plays an important role in reducing overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In the food and beverage (F&B) industry, everything from dairy beverages to table sauces relies on homogenisation as part of its production process.

Choosing Tetra Pak homogenisers with a Circle Green stainless steel hood offers F&B manufacturers a viable path to reducing their Scope 3 emissions, a vital yet challenging aspect of achieving net-zero goals. Depending on the model, using Circle Green on a Homogeniser will reduce the CO₂ emissions by between 160kg to 1370kg per machine[4]. The Circle Green variant range offers the same benefits as the other Tetra Pak homogenisers in the line, such as durability, reliability and ease of operation.

This strategic collaboration with Outokumpu, the global leader in sustainable stainless steel, marks the beginning of a partnership that will see the two companies explore other applications of Circle Green across the Tetra Pak equipment portfolio. This work aims to further help F&B manufacturers achieve their sustainability goals and ensure compliance with evolving environmental regulations.

The launch of the portfolio is the latest step towards Tetra Pak’s own commitment to reach net-zero across the value chain by 2050[5], and forms part of a range of solutions that aim to take a holistic view of F&B manufacturers’ emissions, considering the emissions involved in equipment manufacture alongside taking a factory-wide approach to energy, water and Cleaning in Place (CIP) optimisation.

Niklas Wass, executive vice president for Stainless Europe, Outokumpu, comments: “Low emission stainless steel is at the heart of sustainability solutions across the world. It plays a pivotal role in accelerating the green transition, and the food and beverage industry is a good example of where low emission steel can have a significant impact. We are proud to partner with Tetra Pak on this transformative initiative and look forward to delivering and developing sustainable solutions that facilitate the decarbonisation across the value chain. The cooperation with both companies is a concrete action towards reducing emissions in manufacturing”.

Fiona Liebehenz, vice president of key components plant solutions and channel management, Tetra Pak, comments: “Innovation sits at the heart of our philosophy as a business and our approach to sustainability. The incorporation of Circle Green into our product portfolio is an important step in leveraging the latest innovations to improve our upstream emissions, whilst also helping to reduce emissions at customer sites. Working together to help both Tetra Pak and our customers to reach our individual sustainability goals is fundamental to our promise to protect what’s good.

Hayel Saeed Anam (HSA) Group, Yemen’s largest private company, and packaging manufacturer Tetra Pak have begun their collaborative school milk initiative in Yemen, which was announced in May 2023 at a joint food security workshop co-hosted by HSA Group and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), entitled “Rethinking food crisis responses: the power of partnership to build resilient food systems in Yemen.”

Commenced on 20 November 2023, the pilot initiative will provide fortified flavoured milk for 10,000 children in Yemen once a day on school days, seeking to improve the nutritional intake and the health of pupils whilst incentivising school attendance. The pilot will target an estimated 20 schools in the Taiz governorate.

Under the scope of the initiative:

 • HSA Group is producing UHT milk in local facilities which is fortified with micronutrients and vitamins based on local nutritional deficiencies.
 • Tetra Pak is supplying Tetra Brik Aseptic® 125 packaging, ensuring that the product remains fresh for up to 12 months and thus maximising the distribution time window. As a result, the impact of transport challenges, which are common in Yemen due to damaged infrastructure, will be reduced.
 • HSA Group’s Humanitarian Development Program (HDP) will manage the distribution of milk to schools and coordinate with relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Education and the United Nations’ nutrition cluster, administered by UNICEF and the WFP.
 • HDP will also liaise with schools on storage needs and food safety, engage communities through awareness campaigns, and oversee the monitoring and evaluation of the project.
 • Schools are also using this initiative to raise awareness about the importance of recycling. Children will be taught about the impact of waste on the environment and how waste can be managed sustainably.
 • The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is conducting an impact assessment study to understand the impact of the initiative on the educational and health outcomes of children.

HSA Group and Tetra Pak have been partners for over 20 years and share a passionate commitment to the wellbeing of the Yemeni people. The initiative will be Tetra Pak’s first school milk initiative in Yemen.

Looking ahead, HSA Group and Tetra Pak will continue to ensure access to safe nutrition for Yemeni children as well as improve the food value chain in Yemen by increasing opportunities for small-holder farmers to develop their businesses, earn income and improve their livelihoods. Phase two of this initiative will involve innovating to create affordable nutritious, dairy and cereal-based beverage formulations for school feeding programmes across Yemen.

By leveraging their combined product development and manufacturing capabilities, HSA Group and Tetra Pak are driving forward the production of new affordable and nutritious products for schoolchildren in need.

Hisham Ali Mohamed Saeed, deputy managing director for the FMCG Strategic Business Unit at HSA Yemen said: “Yemen’s young people are disproportionately affected by the ongoing food security crisis in the country, with more than 2.2 million Yemeni children currently suffering from acute malnutrition.

“We are proud to support this transformative project which aims to alleviate the burden of these challenges on young people, supporting them as they grow both physically and intellectually. This initiative also has the potential to improve the income and livelihoods of small-scale dairy farmers, including local producers in the supply chain while alleviating malnutrition for vulnerable populations.

It is our hope that, in partnership with Tetra Pak, we can support the health and wellbeing of Yemen’s young and ambitious population, nurturing talent and unlocking potential.”

Niels Hougaard, managing director at Tetra Pak Arabia, said: “We are honoured to partner with HSA Group on this initiative, which has the potential to make a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of Yemeni children. At Tetra Pak, we believe in the power of collaboration to build resilient food systems, and this school milk program is a prime example of what can be achieved when stakeholders work together towards a common goal.”

The post Tetra Pak launches future food research hub with Lund University appeared first on Dairy Industries International.

]]>
Tetra Pak and Lund University have announced the launch of Biotech Heights, a new research hub that will explore food and materials production using bioprocessing to create useful products from living cells or cell components.

Biotech Heights will establish an open innovation environment, in which all participating organisations will have access to world leading laboratories and equipment for both commercial and academic purposes. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to work alongside several faculties at the University to address both the technical and non-technical challenges facing producers, brands, and manufacturers operating in this space. This, combined with Tetra Pak’s experience supporting food and beverage brands with product development, will make Biotech Heights a space to nurture and test ideas, and collaborate to share knowledge on best practices and consumer trends.

Currently, more than one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to the way we produce, process and package food. With a rapidly growing global population relying on finite arable farmland, innovation in new food sources offers one route to feeding the planet without increasing the pressure on agriculture. Scaling these new food solutions to meet the needs of future generations is far from simple, with many technological hurdles to overcome. The hub is a collaborative space, aiming to bring together unconventional players to build new knowledge and generate scalable solutions.

Charles Brand, executive vice president for processing solutions and equipment at Tetra Pak, says: “Today’s food systems are not fit for purpose, and collaboration across business and academia is crucial to provide new solutions to food systems transformation. Tetra Pak and Lund University share a common goal of developing technology that contributes towards a more sustainable future, and we look forward to taking our decades-long partnership to the next level. With Biotech Heights, we can provide a safe space for customers and collaboration partners to trial solutions to the multi-faceted challenge of scalability.”

The hub will deepen the longstanding partnership between Tetra Pak and Lund University, combining Tetra Pak’s global food processing and packaging expertise with the research capabilities of Lund University, one of the world’s top 100 universities, enriching the region’s existing reputation as a centre for groundbreaking food innovations.

Annika Olsson, Dean at Lund University Faculty of Engineering, said: “Lund University’s research mission in this area revolves around the exploration andadvancement of scalable biotechnology, which we see as a transformative tool to building a more sustainable society. However, none of this is possible without collaborating with key industry partners like Tetra Pak. By bringing together experts from academia and industry with infrastructure from diverse fields, we can foster state-of-the-art advancements and drive positive change on a much larger scale.”

The latest insights from Tetra Pak Index 2023 show that 48% of global consumers believe that technological innovation is crucial to providing healthy food and drink in the future. However, 46% view food innovation as ‘risky’ and fear for the health implications of the same innovations. This dichotomy highlights that the challenge of scaling new food innovations extends beyond technology into consumer acceptance and education. With this in mind, the hub will include cross-disciplinary research within marketing strategies, consumer behaviour, and emerging trends. The work in this field aims to provide market leading understanding of consumer perception and branding, alongside addressing the technical obstacles facing alternative protein producers.

Micael Simonsson, director, processing development and biotechnology at Tetra Pak says: “Tetra Pak is committed to creating healthy and sustainable food products with the help of cutting-edge technology, both by improving and optimising existing processes and investigating new options for food production. We see this partnership with Lund University as one major step to delivering new food innovations that can support this goal. We are also open to additional avenues of research and invite new collaborators to join us in this journey.”
