The Pure-TwistFlip tethered cap from Elopak has been designed so the closure remains attached to the carton throughout its entire lifecycle, reducing the risk of it being littered. It complies with the EU’s Single-Use Plastic Directive, which was introduced as part of efforts to reduce the impact of certain plastic products in the environment and tackle marine littering.

The Pure-TwistFlip 29i is also Elopak’s lightest screw cap to date, helping to reduce the use of plastics, according to the company. It can be combined with any Pure-Pak carton to create a packaging solution that prioritises the environment, safety and consumer convenience.

Commenting on the announcement Elopak CMO Patrick Verhelst states, “We are delighted to share the news that our tethered cap solution will soon be available to customers. The Pure-TwistFlip is a fantastic addition to our current portfolio of opening features that meets the tethering requirements of the EU’s Single-Use Plastic Directive well ahead of its deadline in 2024.”

“As Elopak’s lightest screw cap to date, the Pure-TwistFlip 29i also represents an option for our customers outside the EU who are looking to adopt more sustainable packaging solutions,” he continues.

The cap itself is produced by United Caps. Elopak’s Pure-Pak cartons are made using renewable, recyclable and sustainably sourced materials, the company notes.

]]>
In its latest report, Future Market Insights (FMI), an ESOMAR-certified market research and consulting firm, has estimated steady growth in the dairy product packaging market for the period of assessment between the years 2022 and 2030. Widespread milk consumption on a global scale, applications of dairy products in the food and beverage sector, and strict food safety regulations are aiding growth.

The growing awareness about the importance of packaging in the dairy industry to minimise the risk of adulteration and contamination is a key driver, according to the report. The report also states that logistics and transport requirements and roles in boosting shelf-life is positively influencing growth prospects.

Demand for smaller-portion packaging options coupled with higher disposable incomes and standards of living have significantly bolstered demand. Research into eco-friendly packaging solutions are likely to benefit the industry in the long-term, according to FMI.

Key takeaways of the Dairy Products Packaging Market report:

 • Flexible packaging formats are expected to display fast growth on the back of logistics benefits provided to dairy producers, particularly in developing economies.
 • Paper and paperboard materials are likely to reflect high demand with applications in Tetra Pak formats and benefits of printing substrate.
 • Packaging for milk will remain the key revenue contributor in the industry, owing to higher consumption by a health-conscious consumer base.
 • North America is a leading market aided by a massive milk production sector, and high consumption of cheese, yogurt, and flavored milk products.

“Dairy packaging has transitioned from glass bottles to polyethylene pouches, paper cartons, and tins, to tetra packs and aluminum cans. The growing demand and distribution of dairy products through organized and robust retail supply chain channels has also bolstered the demand for dairy product packaging on a global scale,” says a senior research analyst at FMI.

Covid-19 Impact Analysis

The Covid-19 pandemic has had adverse effect on the global dairy product packaging market. Widespread lockdown restrictions have hurt supply chains in the dairy industry, which has resulted in large-scale wastage of milk resources in many parts of the world. This in turn has hurt short-term demand for packaging.

Also, the foodservice industry has faced severe restrictions, cutting into the demand for dairy products, consequently affecting the dairy product packaging industry. Furthermore, the demand for dairy-based desserts, yogurt, and ice-cream has fallen sharply during the pandemic, limiting packaging supply chains. The recovery of the market will be gradual as concerns over the economic ramifications of the pandemic remain uncertain, states FMI.

Who is Winning?

Leading players in the dairy product packaging market include but are not limited to Mondi Group, WestRock Company, CKS Packaging, Sealed Air Corporation, Nampak Ltd, Saint-Gobain S.A., Ahlstrom, Airlite Plastics, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, Elopak, Rexam, and Clondalkin Group Holdings.

Market leaders are largely focused on investments into product research, especially in exploring the new materials with objective of functionality, and sustainability. According to the report, adoption of eco-friendly materials and formats, and efforts towards aesthetics will remain important for market players through the assessment period.

In November 2020, Greiner unveiled its range of packaging for dairy products made from recycled PET. Norway-based dairy producer TINE has launched sustainable packaging solutions to cut annual plastic consumption by 700 tons, with a research initiative on fiber-based solutions. M&S has unveiled its Innovation Hub to research on plastic-free packaging materials, for varied commodities including dairy products.

The packaging machine group IMA Dairy & Food has signed an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Intecma, based in Spain. Intecma was previously owned by the managing partner, Manuel Gonzalez, who founded the company 30 years ago.

The company is particularly well established in southern Europe and the Maghreb countries and, like the companies of the IMA Dairy & Food group, is very active in the dairy industry. In addition to form, fill and seal machines for cups in the lower capacity performance range, Intecma offers its unique Zero Technology, which can be used for all tools in an FFS system. The focus is on the patented and therefore unique punch for PET, PP and PLA.

The integration of Intecma into the IMA Dairy & Food Group expands the know-how within the group, especially in the FFS area of the sister companies Erca and Hassia. Most importantly, machine operation is streamlined and simplified. In the future, the tools will be manufactured within the group itself. The location in Sant Just Desvern near Barcelona with currently about 50 employees will thus become a core segment of the group.

‘Intecma is well positioned in areas that are part of the core business of our Erca and Hassia brands. We also want to use the company’s expertise to offer our FFS customers the opportunity to convert their existing machines to sustainable packaging materials – from composite to mono-materials that can easily be recycled. With its punch easy breakable PET, PP and PLA cups can be produced. This enables us to offer our customers a one-stop solution for packaging their products in sustainable packaging,” says Thomas Becker, CEO and partner of the IMA Dairy & Food Group.

Intecma will keep the existing brand name.

Elopak, a supplier of carton packaging and filling equipment for liquid food, has launched Pure-Pak Imagine, its most environmentally friendly carton to date, the company says. The new carton is a modern version of the company’s original Pure-Pak carton, designed with an easy open feature.

Elopak’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Patrick Verhelst says, “We wish to play our part in the global shift towards a low carbon circular economy and have therefore created the most environmentally friendly carton possible. The Pure-Pak Imagine carton has no plastic screw cap and is 100% forest based made with natural brown board. The carton is fully renewable and carbon neutral, creating the perfect low carbon, circular economy approach.”

Beverage cartons already have the lowest carbon footprint among liquid food packaging today. Using renewable, recyclable and sustainably sourced materials, Elopak provides packaging solutions that offer a natural and convenient alternative to plastic bottles and fit with a low carbon circular economy.

Carbon neutral since 2016, Elopak uses 100 per cent renewable electricity and has reduced emissions by 70% over the past decade. With cartons manufactured from responsibly managed forests and FSC certified material, Elopak offers customers 100% renewable cartons that use wood-based renewable plastics, rather than relying on petroleum-based plastics.

The Pure-Pak Imagine carton’s unique top fin helps guide consumers how to open the carton. In combination with the modern functionality of the easy-pour and easy-fold features, the new carton design sets a new benchmark in reducing plastics, Elopak says.

“With Pure-Pak® Imagine we aim to help consumers make conscious environmental choices. The carton’s easy opening gives the environmentally-minded consumer a more sustainable pack, with less plastic and more natural renewable materials,” concludes Verhelst.

IMA Dairy & Food, whose equipment solutions comprise the long-established brands Gasti, Hamba, Hassia and Erca, has introduced two new packaging machines. The first is a fill-seal unit featuring flexible, user-friendly operations, the second a four-sided sachet machine incorporating novel single-sided production.

Erca has expanded its machine portfolio to include fill-seal machines for pre-formed cups. Erca’s new EFS-L, features a format-flexible indexing platform for which available options, ease of operation and maintenance procedures have all been enhanced. Modular in design with stainless steel construction and servo-operations, IMA says the EFS-L offers versatility in filling, pre-fill and post-fill operations for both wet and dry ingredients. Chainless cup transportation enables format flexibility and precision index positioning throughout the machine.

Besides its quick release, tool-free format flexibility, IMA says that other benefits of the EFS-L include a chainless drive (no chain stretch, no regular adjustment, less cup cassettes), modular design for recipe functionality and multifill options (overtrack or remote fillers), and improved hygiene options (UVC, Pulse light, H2O2). The machine is available in clean and ultra-clean hygiene levels.

Capable of filling cups up to 130mm in diameter, the EFS-L is suitable for a broad variety of products including yoghurt, fresh cheese, white cheese (curd), cottage cheese, single and multilayer desserts and mousse.

Hassia’s F600 form-fill-seal machine produces four-sided sealed sachets at a pace of up to 80 cycles/minute on as many as 16 lanes. The unit runs a single wide roll located at floor level for easy changeover and front-and-back sachet registration – an option offering more printing choices than traditional two-roll machines. The F600 can handle rolls as wide as 1.200mm with a diameter of 800mm, and can yield up to 16 hours of run time between roll changes; the result is significantly reduced downtime and boosted productivity.

IMA says the F600’s careful product handling places a premium on quality assurance, and its CIP and SIP-suitable dosing units can be adjusted per specific product requirements. IMA assures exemplary filling accuracy and hygiene standards, and the hermetic pack seal produced by the F600 is secure yet easy to open for consumer convenience.

IMA says that the F600 is also flexible. A range of pack designs are possible and sizes can be configured to align with production capacity. The machine’s control concepts are reportedly highly versatile and include opportunities for integration with customer-specific systems. The unit can handle all common packaging materials suitable for heat-sealing.

The post Arla Foods UK revamps its best-before labels appeared first on Dairy Industries International.

]]>
According to Clearmark, coding and labelling experts, nearly 500 million pints of milk are wasted every year in the UK, making it the third most wasted product in the country. A large part of this is due to consumers throwing milk away as soon as it passes the use-by date.

This has led Arla Foods UK to make the decision to switch to best-before labels from 2020, to attempt to reduce dairy waste.

It has asked milk drinkers to vote on their favourite labels, of which there are three options:

 • Check me before you chuck me!
 • Could still be great after this date
 • Check the best before date but I still may be good to enjoy after

To complement this, Arla is currently in the final phases of testing ‘mimica touch’ a type of smart label for food packaging. Developed by the Mimica Laboratory Company, it uses an indicator to tell the consumer when a product is beginning to expire. Fresh food packaging will have a smooth surface that reacts to changes in the food and temperature, causing the smooth surface to turn bumpy when it becomes spoiled.

Introducing these waste-reducing strategies is helping both the planet and business budgets in the long term. According to WRAP.org, many companies are underestimating the true cost of plastic waste from source to production line, such as the cost of recovered plastic versus the virgin plastic packaging options.

Any time you hear about a dairy farmer dumping their milk instead of having it sent off for processing, it is sad. All that time and effort on the part of the famers, their staff and their cows, just going down into the slurry pit. Just tragic, especially as people continue to try and get fresh milk supplies worldwide.

It is just such a tricky business. Large dairy processor Freshways apparently wasn’t collecting down in Kent, UK last week, leading to milk dumping on a farm that BBC’s Farming Today interviewed. But as the coffee shops and restaurant trade that Freshways largely supplies has shut down almost completely, where can the outlet for all that milk be?

Meanwhile, there are multiple reports in the US about milk dumping in several states. While the Irish Farmers Association has sought to reassure its farmers that the co-operatives are working at top speed to continue to collect milk from the farmgates.

Another issue is that of packaging. We took delivery of a tray of 30 eggs (we eat a lot of eggs and bake quite a bit), but it was a catering tray and not obviously set up for the local householder. A shortage of packaging is an issue. We kept our old egg cartons and packed the new eggs into them.

I suspect there will be a lot more of these stories, and there are already stories of other companies and people who will change their businesses because of this. There are a lot of local initiatives springing up to get the formerly wholesale products into the retail customers’ hands. I would get on Facebook and Twitter and see what’s available in your area, both for hot food delivery and for buying essentials like vegetables, milk and eggs. Or bread and cheese. Or even non-essentials such as cake. Which lately, to the detriment of my waistline, is beginning to feel like an essential.

It is a good way to support your local farms and suppliers, and perhaps keep a few businesses going. This will one day be over and we’ll want to go back out to eat in restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and diners, which are supplied by all these fine producers. It would be a shame if we allowed those businesses to wither because we can’t go out, if we can do our small part to help.

Stay safe, and wash your hands.

Multipond, manufacturer of multihead weighers for the packaging industry, will be showcasing its innovative use of motor drives in a distribution system at this year’s Interpack event.

The distribution system, Multipond says, can be combined and synchronized with diverse, horizontal packaging machines of reputable manufacturers as a stand-alone system. Thus, the continuous, rotating filling unit achieves both a higher output and a higher line performance.

The use of Multipond’s motor drives in hygienic design could provide considerable advantages in terms of performance, operational reliability and wear-out compared to conventional systems with pneumatic components:

 • Economical: Compressed air is not necessary for the operation of the machine, which is very expensive, especially in the food industry due to high hygienic requirements.
 • Flexible: Motor systems can be adapted to trays of different heights without any problems; one system can be used for a variety of different trays.
 • Gentle: The burden on the components is reduced by a continuous, variable motor speed. Thus, premature wear-out can be avoided.

Adapted to the Multipond standard, all precautions are taken to realise maximum hygienic requirements. Due to a circular tube frame construction, unnecessary corners are avoided where germs and bacteria can settle. Remaining liquids after the cleaning process run outwards through slanted surfaces. The front of the distribution system is constructed in a way that means format parts are easily accessible. This provides significant benefits, especially for cleaning-intensive applications. The systems consistently meet protection class IP69.

Multipond will be located in Hall 15, booth B02 at the Interpack event in Düsseldorf (7-13 May 2020).

Syntegon Technology is the new name for Bosch Packaging Technology, with a business focus is on technologies for the food industries. Extending the service range is a priority for the company, it says. Syntegon Technology employs 6,100 people at more than 30 locations worldwide. It posted €1.3 billion in sales in 2019. Bosch Packaging Technology expanded its headquarters in Waiblingen, Germany, augmenting it with new departments required for the switch, before the year end.
Bosch disclosed its plans to sell the packaging machinery division to a newly incorporated entity managed by CVC Capital Partners, a private equity and investment advisory firm, in July 2019. The transaction was completed according to plan, with the company gaining full independence at the turn of the year.
The new owner, CVC, aims to develop the company as a whole and expand intra-group synergies. Commenting on the closing of the sale, Marc Strobel, a partner at CVC Capital Partners says, “CVC is delighted to see the transaction completed on schedule. Syntegon Technology has a strong presence in many market segments, great technological know-how, and innovative power. We want to build on these strengths jointly with management and the entire workforce.”
The new corporate brand has been developed over the past few months, the company says. The name Syntegon stands for synergy, technology, and focus on the future. The new corporate colour green underscores the importance of sustainability and health. The square in the newly designed logo symbolises a package, as well as packaging technology’s ability to protect products.

]]>
The Food and Drug Administration has issued additional information to help manufacturers of packaged foods comply with the latest regulations on Nutrition Facts labelling in the US.

The guidance gives information about serving sizes, including single-serving foods that could reasonably be consumed in one meal or snack and require dual column labeling. Products that fall under that category have separate labels listing the nutrition facts for a single serving and nutrition facts for the contents of the entire package.

The FDA hopes its latest information will help clear up confusion.

“In the guidance we issued today, we are helping answer some of the questions most commonly asked by industry about dual column label and serving size issues, including when dual column labeling is required, the definition of a single-serving container, how to determine the number of servings in a food product, and how these labels should be formatted for some products that have limited space for nutrition labeling,” said Claudine Kavanaugh, director of the Office of Nutrition and Food Labeling in the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

“The new Nutrition Facts Label has updated serving sizes for many foods. We know that Americans are eating differently, and the amount of calories and nutrients on the label is required to reflect what people actually eat and drink — not a recommendation of what to eat or drink. The new label, including this dual column layout, will drive consumers’ attention to the calories and per cent daily value of nutrients that they are actually consuming.”

Manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales were required to comply with the updated Nutrition Facts Label regulations as of 1 January 2020, while manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales will have until 1 January 2021. During the first six months following the January 1 2020 compliance date, the FDA said it will not take enforcement actions regarding these requirements during that time.

The FDA also intends to exercise enforcement discretion to give manufacturers of single-ingredient sugars such as honey and maple syrup, and certain cranberry products, until 1 July 2021 to comply.

The six winners of this year’s Dairy Industry Asia Pacific Awards 2019 were announced at a special awards ceremony in Singapore. The awards were hosted by Duxes, the organisers of the 6th Dairy Asia Pacific Summit 2019 (DairyAP), and aimed to recognise the most outstanding products and contributions to the region’s dairy market over the past 12 months.

There were six prizes awarded in total. The products and companies honoured ranged from an innovative new line of probiotic yogurts, to a plant-based beverage aimed at Asia’s increasing coffee-drinking consumers, through to a high-tech packaging solution that promotes essential food safety in the infant nutrition segment.

Best Dairy Ingredient Innovation of the Year
Chr Hansen for it Sweety Y-1, a naturally sweeter dairy culture, developed with the participation of an in-house team of experts at Chr. Hansen’s research laboratories in Denmark.

Using groundbreaking technology they were able to produce a bio-culture that converts sugar differently to traditional processes, resulting in a sweeter-tasting yogurt. This means that less sugar needs to be added to counterbalance yogurt’s naturally sour flavour, and Chr. Hansen’s customers can benefit from a healthier end product.

Most Welcomed Packaging Solution of the Year
United Caps for it 127 SAFE-TE tamper-evident closure specially designed for the needs of the Asian infant nutrition market. The 127 SAFE-TE closure increases baby food safety and convenience with an impenetrable security feature which means it cannot be opened and resealed. In this way, it addresses a key concern of customers in Asia.

Popular Asia-Pacific Plant Based Drink of the Year
Sweden-based Oatly for its Barista Edition foamable oatmilk drink, which was specially developed so that it can be used as a dairy alternative when making milky drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos.

Best Yogurt Innovation of the Year
Local dairy giant Yili for its Yili Yixiao Fermented Milk. This influential drink series was first developed by Yili experts at their main innovation centre in Shanghai, and centres around a particular species of probiotic named Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis).

The resulting strain that Yili now uses in its Yixiao series, Bifidobacterium strain BL-99, has shown promise in treating a range of digestion-related conditions, from intestinal infections to irritable bowel syndrome, according to the company.

Most Sustainable & Innovative Rigid Packaging Solution of the Year
PolyOne for its ColorMatrix Lactra light-blocking additive. This additive can be used during the manufacturing process for PET bottles, reducing the breakdown of dairy products whilst they are exposed to light, making them stay fresher and giving them a longer shelf-life.

Most Impactful Brand of the Year
Theland for Milk New Zealand. The Chinese-owned dairy farm group hit the headlines after it secured a trading agreement with online retailer Alibaba to market its fresh milk direct to Chinese consumers. The deal has been a great success.

Through its network of farms in New Zealand and the unique advantages of grass farming, natural grazing and natural milk production, Theland has also been able to produce its 4.0 Protein Pure Milk product, which has a higher than normal nutrition profile.

Another of Milk New Zealand’s breakthrough achievements has been to reduce farm-to-retailer shipping times. Thanks to an agreement with Shanghai Customs and Changning District Government, the company has been able to deliver products to the mainland in less than 72 hours, setting a new benchmark standard.

Meanwhile, this year’s DairyAP summit featured a wide range of speakers and experts from the world of dairy in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, who came together to discuss the latest trends, regulations and hot topics affecting the market. The first day of the event focused on “Safety and Farm Management”, whilst the second day is scheduled to concentrate on “Innovations in products and Marketing”.

The presentations at the summit include those by highly-regarded professionals from many of the major dairy organisations, retailers and businesses in the world and the APAC region such as Fonterra, Yili, Lazada, Amul Dairy, Nestle, Guangzhou Society of Agronomy, Vietnam Dairy Association and Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development.

Too Good To Go, a food-rescue company, has launched the “Often Good Longer” campaign in Germany. The company is also calling for different food industry actors to work together against food waste in private households by using the phrase “Often Good Longer” on their products. Arla Foods is one of more than 20 companies, which is signing up on Germany.

Every year 6.1 million tons of food land in the garbage cans of private households in Germany. Almost half of all Germans confuse the expiration date with the consumption date. So food is disposed of out of ignorance, even though they are still edible. The “Look-smell-taste” test makes it easy to determine whether a product can still be eaten, even after the best before date has been reached.

Arla Foods Germany will use the addition “Often Good Longer” from February 2020 on its product Arla Skyr. The label is printed in the immediate vicinity of the expiration date. More Arla products will follow in the course of 2020. In addition, Arla Foods will be supporting the topic on its digital channels.

The Arla Foods Group already uses the additive on packaging for many dairy products in Denmark and Sweden.

“The measure is another component of our sustainability strategy, with which we also want to further optimise the utilisation of food. Because even in this country counts every food that is not thrown away,” said Markus Mühleisen, Germany’s head of Arla Foods.

“Therefore, we are very happy that ‘Often Good Longer” has now also come to Germany. In Denmark and Sweden we have already had good experience with the additional information on our packaging. In the future we would also like to encourage German consumers to do even more to prevent food waste, so that nutritious dairy products do not end up in waste unnecessarily,”

In the area of its own production, Arla Foods already has numerous measures to prevent food waste. For example, the dairy company has been working with an organisation of non-profit panels in Germany for many years.

This commitment was significantly strengthened in 2019. In the course of this year, more foodstuffs that could no longer be sold were made available to people in need of assistance, in comparison with the previous year.

In addition Arla Foods has further optimised its forecasts of anticipated sales to produce as needed. And co-operation with retail customers is further improved in order to fine-tune the quantities required.

Müller to remove all plastic straws by 2020 https://www.dairyindustries.com/news/32934/muller-to-remove-all-plastic-straws-by-2020/ https://www.dairyindustries.com/news/32934/muller-to-remove-all-plastic-straws-by-2020/#comments Wed, 20 Nov 2019 12:16:05 +0000 https://www.dairyindustries.com/?post_type=news&p=32934 School children at Sunnyside Primary School in Glasgow have been helping Müller to become the first dairy company in the UK to offer fresh school milk with paper straws.

School children at Sunnyside Primary School in Glasgow have been helping Müller to become the first dairy company in the UK to offer fresh school milk with paper straws.

After contacting the dairy company and presenting their concerns about the environmental impact of plastic straws in 2018, Müller has committed to removing all plastic straws from its products by 2020.

The Scottish school accepted an offer to work with the dairy company to trial Müller’s new paper straw, which is attached to their recyclable school milk cartons.

Having already removed 10,000 tonnes of plastic from Müller Milk bottles since 2016, the initiative builds upon Müller’s continued work to drive down plastic use. Müller’s fresh and flavoured milk bottles are 100% recyclable, and having secured appropriate supplies of recycled HDPE, up to 40% of the plastic in Müller’s fresh milk bottles is made from recycled material. The dairy company has also removed a further 700 tonnes of plastic per annum by lightweighting it’s recyclable fresh milk bottles and milk caps.

Müller’s new paper straw is fully recyclable, it has been developed in partnership with Tetra Pak over the last 18 months and is made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paperboard.

The company is currently undertaking further trials at its Bridgwater site, using the new paper straws.

If successful, Bridgwater will begin the permanent roll out of the paper straws by the end of March 2020. Müller’s other school milk producing sites would follow by the end of 2020, eliminating 48 tonnes of plastic every year.

Lisa Perrie, principal teacher at Sunnyside Primary School said: “It is wonderful for our young conservationists to get their hands on a product first discussed between the Sunnyside Ocean Defenders and Müller over eighteen months ago.

“Müller keeping the children up to date on developments not only shows our young people that their opinion is valued, but that companies like Müller can be the change in reducing the impact of single use plastic. Our Ocean Defenders appreciate that this took time, investment and quite a bit of elbow grease from the Müller team, but the quality of the product today shows that this hard work has paid off. Our pupils loved it!”

Gareth Budd, head of customer innovation at Müller Milk & Ingredients said: “We’ve already removed 10,000 tonnes of plastic from our packaging in recent years, our fresh milk bottles are 100% recyclable, and they contain up to 40% recycled material.

“But to ensure that future generations continue to benefit from the goodness of fresh school milk, we recognise the need to continually innovate and update our packaging.

“The pupils at Sunnyside Primary School have a real passion for positive change, and were an inspiration. We thank them for their valued participation in the trial, and now we’re fully focused on removing all plastic straws from our school milk by the end of 2020.”

Charles Brand, President of Tetra Pak Europe & Central Asia said: “It is important that we launch a sustainable paper straw that is fully functional, recyclable and does not compromise on food safety. We also recognise our responsibility to provide sustainable solutions to our customers that will enable us, as a collective, to move towards a low carbon circular economy.

“We believe this trial is a fantastic way to truly test and receive feedback, and it’s great to receive such a positive reaction to using the new paper straws. We are happy to work together with Müller to roll out paper straws and help them realise their commitment to drive down plastic.”

Arla has utilised Walki’s paper-based lid material for its 175g Luonto+ yoghurt in Finland and for cottage cheese and crème fraiche in Sweden, to help consumers make more sustainable choices.

“We listen very carefully to the buyers of our products”, said Kati Janhunen, brand & category manager at Arla. “Those who choose our Arla Luonto+ yoghurt, for example, consider sustainability to be very important.”

Walki, a globally leading manufacturer of barrier packaging materials, is one of the few suppliers of aluminium-free, flexible, paper-based lid material for single-portion cups.

“The product can be fully recycled in the normal paper recycling process,” said Heikki Lumme, flexible packaging business line manager at Walki.

“And when it comes to the CO2 balance, Walki-Lid beats the conventional material aluminium many times over. This makes it particularly suitable for companies that are seriously committed to sustainability and to reducing their emissions throughout the supply chain.”

Walki-Lid enables dairy products to be packaged completely sustainably – without aluminium and on the basis of renewable and recyclable raw materials. They are made of Walki-Lid material supplied by Walki and manufactured by the Finnish paper, converting and packaging company Pyroll.

Marko Manu, sales manager at Pyroll, said: “Walki-Lid has an excellent aroma, water vapour and gas barrier, is easy to remove from the cup and yet tear-resistant. It is easy to print and matches the packaging processes of our customers. In addition to the technical processability, the quality meets the food safety standards, protects the product optimally and guarantees its shelf life”.

]]>
Liquid dairy manufacturer Yotvata Dairy by Strauss Group, has installed a secondu aseptic complete PET line from Sidel. The move has upgraded the Israel-based brand’s 2-litre ESL milk bottle from HDPE to PET, introducing a new product to the country.

Yotvata had clear objectives around the launch of its new 2-litre PET milk bottle, targeted towards family households: “We needed to break the visual codes compared to our competition, as all local dairy producers – including us – are used to packing milk in 2-litre squared bottles in HDPE with a handle. Additionally, we want to ensure a great brand experience for our consumers and maximise opportunities for the bottles to be easily taken from supermarket shelves,” said Ram Srugo, CEO of Yotvata.

Sidel supported Yotvata in designing and qualifying the new 2-litre PET bottle. The new design – which includes a reflection of the customer’s branding on the top part of the container – comes with significant environmental advantages compared to HDPE, being 100% recyclable and allowing for the lightweighting of bottles.

As well as a new bottle design, Yotvata installed a second aseptic complete PET line from Sidel, allowing the company to produce UHT and Extended Shelf Life (ESL) milk in PET bottles.

“We already had a very positive experience with the Sidel Aseptic Combi Predis technology for PET production on the first line we purchased in 2014. This new packaging line will allow us to increase the production capacity on existing products while reducing our environmental footprint, mainly due to the switch from HDPE to PET and the bottle lightweighting potential offered by Sidel’s integrated dry preform decontamination system,” said Achiraz Horesh, COO at Yotvata.

Currently, the new line is producing 1 L bottles plus the newly designed two-litre bottle for milk in PET. Its flexibility makes it the ideal choice to address Yotvata’s production needs around flavoured, ESL and UHT milk.

The new PET complete line features Sidel’s Aseptic Combi Predis, complemented by Capdis, combining preform and cap sterilisation, blowing and sealing functions in a single enclosure for a 100%-sterile filled and capped PET bottle.

The line also includes Sidel’s RollQuattro, a versatile high-speed roll-fed labeller, able to handle lightweight containers with extremely thin labels, plus conveying and end-of-line equipment. The new installation at the Israeli site includes shrink-wrapping system EvoFill, and PalKombi, an automatic palletiser suitable for crates, cartons, trays and shrink-wrapped packs, designed for medium to high speed lines that allows for easy control and access.

Andrea Tondelli, sales manager Southern Europe, Sidel said: “Yotvata leveraged the entire set of our competences, from packaging design and industrialisation through leadership in aseptic technologies up to our longstanding expertise in complete lines. The Sidel Aseptic Combi Predis delivers utmost hygiene, high ease of operations and flexibility needed to match this customer’s needs, considering the various products they’ll process through the line.”

Swiss company SIG has launched its new Combistyle carton pack. Featuring a distinctively shaped corner to ensure on-shelf differentiation, SIG also claims that the Combistyle offers added functionality and more convenience.

As well as shelf appeal, the new carton pack, which has stylised corner panels, provides a comfortable and safe grip while allowing brand owners to effectively communicate key messages with eye-catching designs.

“Combistyle offers our customers a future packaging concept that will instantly intrigue busy shoppers to find out more”, said Heike Klein, global product manager at SIG.

SIG’s present customers will benefit from a low investment needed to upgrade to combistyle on existing CFA810 and CF812 filling machines, which also can fill CombiblocMidi and CombifitMidi, the original packs for these lines.

This offers manufacturers shape flexibility for different product types and the ability to adapt to changing market demands, as three carton formats can be filled on a single line.

The Combistyle carton pack features SIG’s new CombiMaxx closure, which is fully resealable and leak-proof, allows for easier opening and better pouring, and offers an eco-friendly design.

Combistyle is available in a 1 litre format and a 500ml size will be added soon.

Pre-cut lid and shrink sleeve manufacturer Chadwicks of Bury (part of the Clondalkin Group), has developed an aluminium lidding material to seal to glass.

Developed in-house by Chadwicks, the decorative lids have been produced for a new premium yogurt range from Alston Dairy.

Ken Dunlop, sales manager at Chadwicks said: “Typically, sealing pre-cut lids to glass presents many technical difficulties, however when Alston Dairy approached us about developing a new type of material capable of sealing to glass jars we rose to the challenge. Alston also required a ‘crimped over’ lid to emphasise the premium nature of the range.

“Working in partnership with our sister company Royal Vaassen in the Netherlands, we developed a material that provides an optimum sealing solution for glass, and teamed up with Seal-it-Systems to create the desired ‘crimping’ effect. We now have another great addition to our lids portfolio, which has provided Alston Dairy with a high quality lid that delivers enhanced shelf appeal for its premium product range.”

Emma Coupe, development director from Alston Dairy said: “Chadwicks continues to impress our new product development team and we are delighted with the finished product.”

SIG has launched its new combiMaxx closure, which offers consumers a new level of convenience, while allowing existing customers to upgrade their packaging without a major investment or the need for new sleeves.

With a large pouring diameter of 25mm, combiMaxx offers an optimal product flow and control. The large cap makes it easier and more comfortable for consumers to open and reclose the pack in one easy step. A highly visible, tamper-evidence ring gives consumers the confidence that the package has not already been opened. Fully resealable and leak-proof, combiMaxx also ensures that opened packs can be stored safely in the fridge.

As part of SIG’s dedication to offering the most sustainable packaging solutions on the market, the combiMaxx uses approximately 4.5% less plastic than SIG’s combiSwift.

“At SIG we’re committed to offering product innovation and differentiation,” said Hanno Bertling, senior product manager closures at SIG. “With our latest convenient combiMaxx closure, we can now offer our customers a cap that will help to increase brand loyalty among new and existing consumers. combiMaxx guarantees unbeatable pouring action, easy handling and spill-free horizontal and vertical storage.”

Easy, low cost implementation

Since the base plate dimensions and sleeves remain unchanged, SIG has made it simple for existing customers to switch from combiSwift to the new combiMaxx closure – without requiring a major investment.

Additionally, combiMaxx can be combined with all of SIG’s existing mid- and large-size carton formats, starting with combiblocSlimline, combiblocMidi and combifitMidi. Colour options include white, red, blue and green, with additional colours available upon request.

“The transition for our customers to use the new closure system is easy to implement without any significant cost,” said Bertling. “We want to ensure the food and beverage industry can adapt quickly to fast-paced consumer needs to guarantee ongoing competitive advantage.”
