The board of directors of Nestlé has appointed Laurent Freixe, currently executive vice president and CEO Zone Latin America (LATAM), as chief executive officer at Nestlé, effective 1 September. The board has also nominated Laurent Freixe as a candidate for the board of directors at the 2025 annual general meeting.

Mark Schneider, CEO, has decided to relinquish his roles as CEO and member of the board of directors. Over his eight years with the company, he has actively shaped the company’s portfolio, in line with Nestlé’s strategy and with a focus on high-growth categories like coffee, pet care and nutritional health products, according to the company.

Freixe joined Nestlé in France in 1986. Since then, he has continuously progressed within the company, assuming various positions of increasing responsibility across different businesses, markets and sones. He successfully managed Zone Europe during the financial and economic crisis, from 2008 until 2014. He then took over as CEO of Zone Americas, where he accelerated growth. Following the creation of Nestlé’s new Zone structure in 2022, Laurent Freixe was named CEO Zone Latin America, where he has been successfully leading through challenging conditions.

Freixe has been a member of the executive board for 16 years and, as such, has played an important role in strengthening the strategic direction of the company and its portfolio. With his profound understanding of Nestlé’s culture and values, he has led several global corporate initiatives to improve productivity, increase operational efficiency, simplify processes and drive innovation. Additionally, Freixe has been active in the Nestlé leadership and training programmes as well as the Nestlé Needs YOUth initiative, which promotes youth employment.

Paul Bulcke, chairman of the doard of directors, says, “I have known Laurent for a long time and highly regard him as a talented leader with strategic acumen, extensive in-market experience and expertise as well as a deep understanding of markets and consumers. He has demonstrated his ability to deliver results in challenging market conditions. Laurent’s curiosity fuels his passion for innovation and positive change. Laurent is the perfect fit for Nestlé at this time. Under his leadership, Nestlé will further strengthen its position as a dependable, reliable company through consistent and sustainable value creation.”

Bulcke continues, “I would also like to express our gratitude to Mark for his significant contributions to Nestlé and for his outstanding, steady leadership in turbulent times. Mark has been instrumental in the great progress we have made on our sustainability agenda. We extend our best wishes to him in all his professional and personal endeavours.”

Freixe says, “I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to continue building and strengthening Nestlé, and I am excited to take on this responsibility. There will always be challenges, but we have unparalleled strengths, such as iconic brands and products, an unmatched global presence, leading innovation and execution capabilities, and above all, exceptional people and teams. We can strategically position Nestlé to lead and win everywhere we operate.”

]]>
The German plant manufacturer WELTEC BIOPOWER is supporting Yarra Valley Water for the refurbishment of its 1-megawatt biogas plant in the north of Melbourne. Yarra Valley Water, is one of Australia‘s largest water and wastewater companies. Since the completion of the waste and food waste plant by WELTEC BIOPOWER and its project partner in 2017, Yarra Valley Water’s Aurora Treatment Plant has been energy self-sufficient. In order to be able to operate the
plant profitably into the future, it has been undergoing a technical modernization including biological service planned for August 2024. The work of the local team is being supported by WELTEC on site.

The output of the plant, which has two 530-kilowatt CHP units, covers the energy requirements of the biogas plant. The electricity generated is able to power both the facility itself and the sewage treatment plant, with excess energy is exported to the electricity grid. The plant has a processing capacity of 33,000 tons of organic waste from food processors and restaurants to generate around 7,500,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year. Accepted waste includes fats, oils, brewery and
dairy residues, fruit and vegetables which are fed into the stainless steel containers. The plant has already won prestigious awards for its technology: These include the Premier‘s Sustainability Award for leading innovation and practice in Victoria and the Banksia Award for Leading in Circular Economy.

At the start of the maintenance work, the tanks will first be completely emptied. In addition, the roofs of the two 3,573 cubic meter stainless steel fermenters and internal plant components such as the agitator technology will be replaced. The plant will then be commissioned and operational management will be secured. The digester contents will be temporarily stored in the storage tank and material can be filled back into the tanks after the refurbishment so the plant can be up and running quickly. This saves resources and costs. In addition, it is easier to restart the biological process when the fermented material is immediately available. Last but not least, the processes also comply with occupational safety requirements, which are a high priority in Australia – especially when emptying and filling the tanks. WELTEC will also provide on-site staff training. “WELTEC BIOPOWER has been a valued partner in our successful journey with our Wollert Facility. We value their commitment to safety and quality and have leveraged their expertise in mechanical and biological consulting over the lifespan of our facility,” emphasizes Stephanie Salinas, manager waste to Energy Services at YVW. “WELTEC can look back on extensive experience with such complex refurbishment projects. We are delighted that we have been able to enjoy the trust of our customers over such a long period of time,” says Vladimir Bogatov, area sales manager Asia Pacific at WELTEC BIOPOWER.

With more than 400 biogas plants planned and built worldwide and a strong service department, WELTEC has the necessary level of expertise for such modernizations. This experience is also valued Down Under to ensure that the plant operation remains flexible and continues to live up to its reputation as one of Australia‘s most innovative biogas projects in the future.

The announcement follows a reorganisation of the PML Seafrigo management team which also sees Ryan Parr assume the role of Operations Director for the UK and Ireland, overseeing the efficient and seamless transfer of temperature sensitive goods by air, ocean and road.

Commenting on the appointment, Seafrigo Group CEO Eric Barbé said, “Mike’s profound knowledge, understanding and expertise within the perishable goods market and his impressive reputation within the sector, not just as a successful business operator but also as a key figurehead and spokesperson who is regularly sought out to comment on the challenges facing our industry, combine to make him the natural candidate to continue PML Seafrigo’s growth and development. Seafrigo has exciting expansion plans in place to enable the business to continue in its journey, to becoming the world’s leading end-to-end temperature-controlled food logistics solution and I’m confident that under Mike’s stewardship, PML Seafrigo will be integral in the future success of Seafrigo Group.”

Mike Parr says, “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be working closely with Mr Barbé to lead PML Seafrigo into the next phase of its development. By harnessing the global presence and extensive resources associated with both companies, together with the shared ongoing commitment to the delivery of a best-in-class customer service, I firmly believe that PML Seafrigo will further enhance its reputation for excellence within the specialist field of logistics and supply chain solutions for perishable goods.”

]]>
Tetra Pak and the Lund University School of Economics and Management (Lusem) in Sweden have recently completed a joint study that presents four plausible scenarios for the future of the dairy industry. The study analyses six key global markets to examine the critical uncertainties of social environmental forces and technological transitions that could shift the dairy landscape in the next ten years.

Frederik Wellendorph, vice president for the liquid food business unit at Tetra Pak says, “The food and beverage sector will undergo an enormous transformation over the next decade, with the dairy industry feeling this most acutely. Clearly, many challenges lie ahead – but there are plenty of opportunities for manufacturers too. The key to success in the new landscape will be in embracing flexibility and proactively responding to the wave of disruptive changes.”

Dr Christian Koch of Lusem adds, “The global dairy industry is at the very heart of the global food transformation, and the contours of this transition are already starting to take shape. This project, in used established methodologies to develop scenarios for the dairy industry in 2030 and related food processing and distribution sectors. The scenarios are as different from each other as possible, within the limits of plausibility and credibility. Thus all should be considered as future plausible outcomes.”

The study, “Global trends affecting dairy strategies,” follows an 18-month research project by Lusem, supported by Tetra Pak, to examine a shifting dairy landscape and forecast what the dairy industry will look like in 2030. Analysing six key global markets, including the UK, US, China, India, Nigeria and Brazil, the study outlines four plausible scenarios – Dairy Evolution, Green Dairy, New Fusion, and Brave New Food – each demonstrating the varying interplay of socio-environmental forces and technological transition, and with very different outcomes.

Dairy Evolution is the scenario characterised by no big surprises where the dairy industry would continue to follow current trends with smaller disruptions. Green Dairy is marked by strong socio-environmental forces, such as consumer demands and policy restrictions but little technological transition, that drive the dairy industry to invest heavily to reduce carbon footprint. New Fusion dominated by innovative technologies and processes, but weak socio-environmental forces, would significantly impact the industry. The final scenario, Brave New Food, is the scenario combining strong socio-environmental forces and highly innovative technologies, which together would lead to a complete transformation.

The four scenarios present a myriad of implications that could change the business environment. Tetra Pak has already started collaborating with start-ups and academia to accelerate understanding of the performance of different proteins under different processing conditions.

The four plausible scenarios of the study were arrived at by using methodology based on the Oxford Scenario Planning Approach, identifying both predetermined factors, such as demographic shifts and climate change, and potential disruptions from critical uncertainties such as technological transformation and socio-environmental forces.

Germany’s largest dairy co-operative, Deutsche Milchkontor (DMK), is undergoing a conversion process (Vision 2030) to adapt to the changing needs of consumers. As part of the rollout of this image, DMK is also consciously usinf the voice of the workforce. In an accompanying film, the company relied on real actors, be it employees, customers or other stakeholders.

This film about the challenges and motivation of DMK has now been awarded a “Golden Victoria” at the 29th International Business Film Festival in Vienna.

The DMK contribution, “Hallo 2030,” won in the Event Films category. The jury included the roadshow, which is part of the roll-out of the film through more than 20 DMK locations with a “watch box” and the communication strategy considerations, behind it in the evaluation.

“Above all we rely on a coordinated information policy. We teased ‘Vision 2030’ through various internal channels, involved and prepared the managers. But the roll-out is also about getting the broad workforce enthusiastic about the topic. The dairy industry cannot ignore the fundamental changes in society,” explains Oliver Bartelt, head of communication, DMK Group.

“Communication as a driver of our realignment has practically moved from the pit lane to the pole position. Our accompanying regular employee survey proves this very impressively. I am pleased with this confirmation and I am proud that my communication team and our partners at deepblue networks and Brickbeach as film production were rewarded for this effort with this great award.”

At this year’s International Business Film Days, almost 350 entries were seen in 26 categories, coming from Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, South Tyrol and Luxembourg.

Gold was awarded to 28 films, including the DMK contribution. Other winners and silver winners in other categories included Sonova, Audi, Duracell, Drägerwerk, Fraunhofer, VW, Lamborghini, ZDF and Daimler.
The International Economic Film Days are the oldest festival for commercial films in the German-speaking area.

Nestlé is selling its US ice cream business to Froneri, an ice cream-focused joint venture Nestlé created in 2016 with PAI Partners, for a transaction value of US$4 billion (€3.6bn).

In 2016, Nestlé and PAI Partners merged Nestlé’s European ice cream business in 20 countries and PAI-owned R&R to create Froneri, one of the world’s largest ice cream companies.

With a portfolio of brands, unparalleled ice cream knowledge and focus as well as an agile and entrepreneurial management style, Froneri has been able to achieve rapid sales and profit growth, steadily gaining market share and reaching a turnover of around CHF 2.9 billion (€2.6bn) in 2018.

Froneri, which already had operations in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia-Pacific will now have a strong presence in the US, the largest ice cream market in the world. The recent acquisitions of TipTop in New Zealand and Nestlé’s ice cream business in Israel have also increased Froneri’s growing global footprint.

Nestlé USA’s successful ice cream business comes with a high-calibre management team, marketing, manufacturing and sales/distribution capabilities. In 2018, turnover was US$1.8 billion (€1.6bn). With brands like Häagen-Dazs, Drumstick and Outshine, the business commands leadership in key ice cream categories, notably super premium.

Mark Schneider, Nestlé CEO, said: “The creation of Froneri has been a phenomenal success. We are now making this business our global strategic partner in ice cream and are convinced that Froneri’s successful business model can be extended to the US market. With this transaction, we are taking a decisive step towards our goal of achieving global leadership in ice cream.”

Ibrahim Najafi, Froneri CEO, said: “This is another milestone acquisition for Froneri as we drive towards becoming the world’s best ice cream company. We’re delighted to be bringing such well-loved US brands into the Froneri family. The acquisition is testament to the strength and longevity of our relationship with Nestlé. This partnership and the continued support of PAI Partners will be essential to ensuring we continue to delight consumers with innovative, high quality products in all markets.”

Frédéric Stévenin, partner at PAI Partners, said: “We are excited to bring Nestlé’s stellar US ice cream business to Froneri. This is a great opportunity for further growth, building on the expertise of the world’s leading pure-play ice cream company.”

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2020. Nestlé will continue to manage its remaining ice cream businesses in Canada, Latin America and Asia as part of its current market structure.

Palsgaard was awarded the Sustainability Champion prize at the Food Ingredients Europe Innovation Awards, after reducing net CO2 emissions from its six global production sites to zero.

In 2010, Palsgaard set itself the goal of completely carbon neutral production within ten years, and met it in 2018 – two years ahead of schedule. Over the course of those eight years, the company reduced its net CO2 emissions from 12,029 tonnes to zero. In total, its carbon reductions amounted to 56,175 tonnes, which is equivalent to the amount produced by 4,885 EU households in a year.

Palsgaard achieved its target primarily by changing the energy sources used by its factories. Strategies included a switch from heavy fuel oil to certified biogas, and the use of renewables. At Palsgaard’s main site in Denmark, all electricity is sourced from hydro power, and indoor heating is powered by burning home-grown straw rather than oil.

Its factory in the Netherlands, meanwhile, has over 800 solar panels and has used only renewable energy (solar, wind and biogas) since the start of 2018.

As far as Palsgaard is aware, it is the only emulsifier manufacturer to achieve carbon neutrality but it hopes other companies will follow suit.

Palsgaard CEO Jakob Thøisen said: “We’re delighted to have been honoured with this award. Climate change is the biggest challenge facing the world right now and sustainability is not only hugely important to us but to our customers too. The production of emulsifiers is highly energy-intensive because it requires very high temperatures and high pressure, but we’ve shown that it’s possible to go carbon-neutral. It’s fantastic for everyone working at Palsgaard that our efforts have been recognised.”

The Fi Innovation Awards celebrate companies and organisations breaking new ground in the food and beverage industry. The Sustainability Champion Award is given to the entrant that best demonstrates a measurable sustainability strategy championing environmental or social sustainability.

Müller Yogurt & Desserts has created two new senior roles to further accelerate its progress in branded and private label sales to grocery, convenience and food service channels in the UK and Ireland.

The business has confirmed that Jonathan Piper will join Müller Yogurt & Desserts from Hovis where he is currently UK sales director, to lead a customer centric sales team with overall responsibility for branded activity in the UK & Ireland.

Prior to his work with Hovis, Jon held a similar role at Kellogg’s and spent three years within Müller as sales director Ireland and business unit head. Earlier in his career he held various sales roles with Coca-Cola European Partners and Mars Petcare.

The newly created commercial director, private label & food service role will be taken by David Hollins, currently private label business unit head at Müller Yogurt & Desserts.

David has almost three decades of experience working within dairy. Having spent 12 years with Lactalis and Lactalis Nestlé, David joined Müller in 2012 and created the existing private label yogurt and dessert business, which completed a £50m expansion earlier this year.

Bill Mathieson, current Müller Yogurt & Desserts commercial director, will be leaving the business in January to take a senior role outside the organisation.

Bergen Merey, managing director at Müller Yogurt & Desserts said: “Müller is long established as the nation’s favourite yogurt brand and we’ve now completed a substantial investment in Telford to enable us to make an additional 500m pots of yogurt per annum, to meet the growing needs of the branded and private label yogurt sector.

“The creation of these two senior roles will align our commercial organisation with the rapidly changing needs of the markets we serve.

“We look forward to welcoming Jon and David to their new roles, and thank Bill for his significant contribution over the last six years.”

A group of Yorkshire entrepreneurs have acquired the UK’s only producer of Swaledale cheese from the liquidators and have ambitious plans to revitalise the brand.

Richard Darbishire, Bob Bigley and Bengt Odner bought the Richmond-based Swaledale Cheese business in July and their first products will soon be ready to hit the shelves of both regional and national independent retailers and wholesalers ready for the Christmas season.

Richard has extensive experience of the dairy industry as he was one of the first employees at Leeming Bar-based ice cream manufacturer R&R Ice Cream which started out in 1985 with just five staff and a turnover of some £200,000. He was there for 17 years, latterly as procurement director, during which time the company grew to become the UK’s largest own label ice cream maker. It is now part of a joint venture with Nestlé called Froneri, a global ice cream business with more than 10,000 employees.

Bob Bigley also worked at R&R Ice Cream where he was director of corporate development for five years from 2010. A former director of Hambros Bank, Bob was also partner in charge of corporate finance in the North for accountants KPMG. Bengt Odner has held industry posts in the USA as well as senior banking and property roles on mainland Europe.

Richard Darbishire, who is in charge of production, said: “Our intervention has saved this important UK cheese from extinction. We are confident that, by aligning our capabilities with the growing demand for our products and further developing the skills of our workforce, we will be able to restore the company to its rightful prominent place in the UK cheese sector. The brand was previously available in Waitrose as well as in leading restaurants, independent retailers and wholesalers. We aim to restore these listings.

“All our milk comes locally from a single source and we are focussing on seeing that both our blue and natural cheeses are fully matured and ripened in our specially-designed, on-site facilities to produce that unique Swaledale flavour.”

Atley Hill Raw Milk at Scorton near Northallerton provides all the milk for the business and currently delivers some 4,000 litres of milk a week through Payne’s Dairies from its 70-strong herd of Ayrshire cows. The farm won the silver award for the best-tasting milk at the 2019 Great Yorkshire Show.

The natural and blue versions of the cheese are hand-salted, have natural rind and are available in 2.5kg, 1kg, 0.5 kg and 200g formats. No plastic packaging is used at any stage during the production process with the finished products being shipped in waxed paper.

The range is currently available from wholesalers such as Cryer & Stott and Michael Lee Fine Cheeses as well as retailers Lewis & Cooper in Northallerton.
